Serenity placed a hand on the man’s back. Peter straightened up and grabbed the other hand Serenity had free. He pulled it to his chest and embraced her tightly. Serenity couldn’t hold back anymore and started crying.
“Why? Why, Dad? Why?” Serenity sobbed
“My girl! There’s so much I need to tell you,” Peter said, holding her chin to look at her face.
He let go of the hug and took the briefcase Serenity was holding
“My girl… Come with me, I need to talk to you. We need to talk, and this is not the place.”
Peter grabbed the briefcase with one hand and Serenity’s hand with the other as they walked toward his car. He placed the briefcase in the back seat, then opened the door to help Serenity get in. She hesitated for a moment, but in the end, she agreed.
Before getting into his car, Peter called Theodore. He needed the driver to pick up Celeste. Runhing into Serenity was not part of his plans, and this situation would take him some time.
“Serenity, there’s something I need to start with,” Peter saxl, looking at the girl sitting next to him.
“Tell me…” Serenity replied, her eyes still filled with tears
“I don’t know you, I have no memories of you, I have no memories of your mother, I don’t have any memories of what I lived before the accident.”
“What do you mean by that?” Serenity asked, intrigued.
“The last thing I remember from my life is my head smashing against a rock, then a buzzing, everything went black, and it stayed that way for five long years. Serenity, I was in a coma for that long and in many other states. Once they were able to stabilize me, I woke up, but I was literally like a baby. I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t eat on my own, I couldn’t do anything.”
Serenity stared at him with tears in her eyes, unable to believe what she was hearing.
“Did it really take you 5 years to recover?” Serenity asked, doubtful.
“Actually, it took 7 years, almost 8 years. Believe me…” Peter said, resigned, letting out a sigh. “As soon as I regained my senses and found you, I went for you, I had every intention of seeing you. I wasn’t at peace. The investigation only yielded data from the time you were in your mother’s womb until you were two and a half years old. Obviously, I was very worried, but…
“But what, Dad…?”
“I forgot that almost 8 years had passed. To you, I was dead, and for me, life stopped during that time. But for you, life went on.”
Despite how confusing this sounded, Serenity understood what he meant. According to what she had been told, Marcus and they had met when Serenity was just over two years old. Her mother had married him when she was five, and if Peter had been looking for her, by that time, she was already almost 8 years old.
The look on Serenity’s face must have been very expressive as Peter said:
“Do you understand what happened? I couldn’t come back and pretend nothing had happened. The only time! saw you, you were playing with your mother in the park after school. You were clearly a very demanding little girl, running all over the place. Your mother seemed so happy. I didn’t want to change that…”
“You couldn’t decide that alone! You should’ve talked to my mother, you shouldn’t have done this to us…
