Maximus returned to the office after two weeks away the longest he had been absent since becoming the president of the company. He looked exhausted, but he had no choice but to push through and keep his mind off the memories and thoughts of his wife, who was now under Emma’s care since yesterday. 

“Maximus! I’m so glad to see you backd! How are you? How’s your dramatic wife doing?” Alexia greeted him with a huge smile. 

“Miss Levett, I’m going to ask you to have more respect for Mary. She’s been going through a lot, and it all started because of what she saw. Your comment is out of line.” 

“Maximus! I’m sorry, I thought you were annoyed by her behavior!” Alexia’s smile faltered, turning into a look of surprise. 

“The fact that I sometimes make negative comments about my wife doesn’t give same. You need to know your place–right now, you’re my lover, nothing more.

“Sorry, Maximus! I didn’t think that would bother you. I won’t do it again. But you don’t have to remind me of what I had to endure to be with you.” Alexia’s voice turned soft and pitiful, trying to play on his emotions. 

“Fine. I’ve been away too long, and I need to catch up on work. Let’s keep personal matters outside the office for now.” 

Maximus had woken up with a heavy heart, remembering how he had deceived Mary into marrying him. 

she He had thought he was the one being tricked, but in reality, if it hadn’t been for his manipulation, would have been the one betrayed. He had only married her to please his grandmother and secure his position, but the guilt weighed heavily on him now. 

Alexia As Maximus sat behind his desk, overwhelmed by the pile of documents waiting for his review, watched him. Her mind raced. Just a couple of weeks ago, he had been promising her undying love. Now, something had changed. She could feel it. Her scheme had worked–sending those photos to Mary had shattered any peace between them–but it seemed to have backfired in a way she hadn’t anticipated. 

“Alexia, can you tell me how the contract with Peterson Group is coming along?” 

“The contract is almost finalized. We’re in the last round of meetings. In fact, it would be great if you could attend today’s session–it would mean a lot to the clients to see you 

there.” 

“Alright. I’ll see if I can clear some space in my schedule. What time is the meeting?” 

“It’s at 1:00 PM, Maximus. If you could make it, it would be a privilege.” 

“Thanks, Alexia. I’ll try to be there.” 

Maximus settled in behind his desk, ready to drown himself in the mountain of paperwork. He needed to focus, to escape the guilt gnawing at him. But his thoughts kept drifting back to Mary and the mess he had created. 

Meanwhile, at the hospital where Mary was recovering, Dr. Xavier entered the room for his rounds.
