Dr. Xavier, noticing her tone, began to plece together that her emotional turmoll was likely connected to her husband. He had seen similar cases before patients whose mental health was deeply affected by their relationships, But something else troubled him. When Mary had first arrived, he had noticed other bruises on her body, some that didn’t seem recent. He hadn’t sald anything at the time, but now he suspected there was more to the story than he had initially thought. 

“Alright, Mrs. Palmer. I’ll get everything ready for your discharge, but we still need your husband’s authorization. Emma, could you please contact him?‘ 

“Of course, Doctor,” Emma replied, quickly pulling out her phone. She tried calling Maximus several times, but there was no answer. After a few more attempts, she decided to call Matthew, 

“Matthew? Are you there?” 

“Yes, Emma. What’s going on?” 

“I’ve been trying to reach Mr. Palmer, but he’s not picking up. The doctor says Mrs. Palmer is ready discharged today, but we need his authorization. Can you let him know?” 

“I’ll handle it, Emma. He’s in a meeting right now, but I’ll interrupt if necessary. Give me a minute.” 

Emma stayed on the line, listening as Matthew relayed the message to Maximus.

“Sir, sorry to interrupt, but I’ve got Emma on the line. They’re ready to discharge Mrs. Palmer from the hospital, but they need your authorization.” 

“Alright, Matthew,” Maximus said as he stood up from the meeting. Addressing the group, he added, ” Ladies and gentlemen, I need to excuse myself. My wife is being discharged from the hospital, and I have to take care of it. Matthew and Alexia will continue handling things in my absence.” 

Maximus quickly packed up his things and was about to leave the office when he felt a slim hand grip his arm. It was Alexia, her eyes filled with anger. 

“Maximus, where are you going? We’re about to close the deal, and you’re leaving? Don’t you realize the clients will think you don’t take them seriously?” 

“Alexia, my wife is in the hospital. I need to go authorize her release. And another thing–once again, you’re overstepping your boundaries. I’m the boss, and you’re my subordinate. The client is mine, not yours. I appreciate the hard work you’ve put into securing this deal, but you’re not doing it for free. Your salary is very generous, not to mention the substantial bonus you’ll receive once this contract is finalized.” 

“Maximus! You think this is about money?” Alexia’s voice was incredulous. 

“No. I still believe you’re the woman I fell for, but sometimes you make it very clear that your priority is making more money, even if it means crossing the line. I’m too tired to deal with your outbursts today. I have to go see Mary and settle things with her. Maybe soon, I’ll finally give you what you’ve been asking for.” 

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Emma was helping Mary change into her clothes. The nurses had removed her IV, and now they were just waiting for Maximus to arrive. But when the door opened, it
