“Have you ever considered having a child?” Maximus asked, breaking the brief silence. “I mean, you have Alden, but you met him as a teenager. Grace, well, you took her inas a daughter, but she was already grown too. Have you ever thought about starting a family with someone?”
Peter paused, smiling faintly before replying, “I won’t deny it–I’m a man, and I have my needs. But I never imagined building a life with any of the women I’ve dated That’s something I’m sure about. I never thought of starting a family with someone… at least, not until now.”
“With Ethan’s teacher?” Maximus asked knowingly.
“Her name is Celeste. Celeste Johnson,” Peter said, the warmth in his voice unmistakable. “And yes, she’s the only person who’s caught my interest in the last 12 years. don’t know if she feels the same way about me, but I want to give it a shot. We’ll see what happens in the future
Maximus hesitated, his thoughts drifting to a different subject. He wanted to ask, but the weight of it made him unsure how to start. Peter noticed the tension in his brother’s expression and broke the silence.
“Just ask,” Peter said. “I know where your mind’s at from the way you’re looking.”
“What about Mary?” Maximus asked bluntly. “Have you truly closed that chapter of your life? I don’t think so. If you had, you wouldn’t run every time you see her.”
Peter took a deep breath, looking down at his glass. “Mary will always be a painful chapter. I don’t know how you close something like that. She was important to me once, just as she was probably important to you. But she’s happy now, Maximus. She has a family with Marcus–a son and two more on the way. I have no right to disrupt her life.”
He paused, his voice quieter as he continued. “Marcus was my friend–a great friend. Given the unusual circumstances, it’s obvious we can’t be what we were before. But I care about him, and I’m grateful to him. Without him, Mary wouldn’t be alive today.”
Maximus’s chest tightened as he listened to his brother’s words. He knew Peter was right. Back then, when his brother “died,” Maximus had been consumed by his own selfish infatuation, blinded to the love and loyalty his brother and Mary had shared. He had failed them both.
“Let’s change the subject,” Peter said suddenly, taking a sip of his drink. “I don’t like dwelling on this. No amount of talking will magically fix it. So why dwell on something I can’t do anything about right now?”
Maximus nodded, grateful for the shift. “No matter how much I think about it, I still don’t know what to do. What do I even say to my daughter? How am I supposed to react to all of this?”
“Tell her you support her, no matter what she decides,” Peter said firmly. “She’s not alone–she has you. If that boy steps up, great. But if he doesn’t, you’ll always be there for her. She’s a woman now, and she needs to face the responsibilities she’s taken
But knowing you’re in her corner will mean everything. She’s your daughter,
Maximus. And you love her.”
Maximus exhaled deeply. “You know… I still can’t believe you and I are sitting here, drinking and talking about my problems.”
“Well,” Peter said with a smirk, “I guess that’s one of the perks of losing your memory.”
Peter hadn’t told anyone that his memories were slowly returning. He wasn’t sure how to handle the rush of emotions that came with them. But he didn’t want to create awkward moments by bringing it up. What he did know, though, was that he enjoyed talking with his brother It felt like a rare bond between two men–one, 50 years old and unexpectedly mature, and the other, 55, who seemned frozen in time.
