Chapter 0515
Chapter 0515
“No, Marcus, it’s me who needs to apologize. Something’s been bothering me, consuming my thoughts, and it’s not fair to you–to you, my husband.”
Before Marcus could respond, Valerie was already by his side. Her growing belly brushed his shoulder as she stood close. Marcus turned to face her and stood, gently lifting her off her feet and placing her on his desk. He hugged her tightly, sensing she wanted to speak but silencing her with a warm kiss.
He knew what she was about to say, and he didn’t want to hear it. But Valerie was determined to clear the air. Marcus had no choice but to steel himself and keep a neutral expression.
“Marcus, two days ago, when I went to pick up John, I swear I saw Peter. I know he saw me too–his face was full of surprise. It wasn’t Alden; he was dressed differently. But when I woke up, you were the only one by my side, and Ethan’s father was in another room. Still, it wasn’t Peter; it was his son, Alden.
“And today, it happened again. In the hospital elevator. When those women stepped out, they revealed the man leaning against the wall of the elevator. Marcus, I’m certain it was him! You didn’t see him, but I did. He was wearing the same glasses. It’s not my imagination. He looks older, just like us. This isn’t a hallucination. How could I imagine what he’d look like after all these years? Tell me, Marcus–how could I?”
Marcus felt a wave of anger surge through him. His body burned with the effort of staying composed. He clenched his fists but didn’t want to lash out or hurt his wife. Still, her words struck at the fear he had been suppressing for so long.
“Val, the most important thing right now is the babies. Don’t you think they’re absorbing all this anxiety? Let me ask
you something: what if it was him? What if he’s alive? What would you do? What would change? Would you leave me to be with him? Tell me!” Marcus’s voice finally broke, his frustration spilling out.
Valerie stared at him, stunned and unsure of how to respond. She could see how much her words hurt him. From her perspective, the possibility that Peter might still be alive was overwhelming–but with the Palmer family, wasn’t anything possible?
“Marcus… I don’t expect you to understand. I just wanted to be honest. Yes, I’m struggling with what I saw. I try not to think about it, but I can’t help it. I’m sorry, truly, I’m sorry! I don’t want to hurt you, but Peter was an important part of my past.”
“Valerie, I knew Peter too. Believe me, everything that happened didn’t just hurt you. You lost the man who was going to be your husband and Serenity’s father. I lost someone I considered my brother, my friend–the only true friend I had back then.
“When I chose to accept my feelings for you, I decided to let Peter go. I chose to move on. Yes, there are times when guilt creeps in, but you’ve been there for me. But this hearing what you’re telling me, it hurts. It hurts because our children–our unborn children–are being bortbarded with all this emotional chaos.
“We’re not young anymore, Valerie. Our kids absorb everything you project. Do you ever think about that? Whether Peter is alive or not, he’s a grown man. But our children, the ones forming in your womb, need you to think of them first. Please, think of that before making Peter your priority,”
Marcus tried to stay calm, but in Valerie’s eyes, he saw doubt, pain, and something he couldn’t quite name. It shattered him. He released her from his embrace and, before the argument could escalate further, left the room. He needed space, air, and time to think.
