Maximus felt a sharp pain in his chest. If everything his grandmother was saying was true, Mary had been the only victim here. She was a victim of him and Alexia, but mostly of him. 

“Maximus, I want you to know that it really took a lot convince her. She was young, but she wasn’t a fool. It’s obvious that Alexia is beautiful, mature, and academically accomplished. Compared to her, Mary had several disadvantages. But she loves you, and for me, as your grandmother, that was the most important thing.” 

“Now that you know how it all happened, do you still think your wife is a heartless gold–digger?” 

“Grandma, why did you mention the union of the two families?“! 

“Well, Maximus, that’s another story. But I do remember mentioning it, just as you recall. I said that by uniting you two, our families would be one again, and I was excited because I foresaw days of prosperity for both families. When her grandfather resolves the legal issues he’s facing, he’ll be in for a big surprise. 

“Maximus, Mary is ready to divorce you. There’s nothing more I can do to keep her. But I’ll take care of her while she recovers. In this time, you need to figure out what you really want. Now that your complexes‘ have been cleared up, maybe you can see Mary in a new light. She never lied to you. In fact, she always knew you didn’t love her completely. But she always hoped that if she became a devoted wife, you’d fall in love with her.” 

“Grandma, why didn’t you ever mention any of this? Emma never told me anything.” 

“Why should we have? That day was a sensitive topic for us, and Mary asked that we not bring it up again. She didn’t want to discuss it in front of you. So, the three of us promised not to talk about it until now, when you brought it up in a completely wrong way. Now, son, I must go. My flight leaves in a couple of hours, and Peter and Mary are already ahead. I hope you don’t mind that I took the company plane to get here faster for her.” 

“Why is Peter with her?” 

“My dear, you know something? When you told me your future wife would be Mary, I was happy but also sad because I knew Peter was in love with her. 

“Now, seeing everything she’s had to endure with you, I think it would’ve been better if she had run away that day. Maybe your brother and she would have been happy together. But we’ll never know because, despite everything you did to Mary, she loves you. 

“I’m leaving now. Think hard about how you’ll make up for the pain you’ve caused Mary these past three years. Think, maybe the best gift for your wife is her freedom. She’s young and can still find someone who will love her and help her forget your mistreatment, your blows, and all the unpleasant situations she’s lived through with you.” 

Maximus stood there in silence, watching his grandmother’s silhouette fade into the distance. He was stunned. He’d truly been a fool to his wife. He had never tried to clear things up and let himself be influenced by 

y what he heard and by what Alexia told him. But deep down, he thought, ‘Maximus, you’re an idiot. You’re not a child anymore. How could you have fallen for such a childish game?”
