Chapter 0055
Maximus stood up from the bench, feeling the weight of guilt pressing down on his heart. For so long, he had been a fool, the executioner of Mary’s hopes and dreams, all for a crime she had never committed. She had given him her heart, her youth, and her innocence, only to be treated like a pawn in his game. With a trembling hand, he pulled out his phone and called Matthew.
“Matthew, I need you to help me Investigate something I want to know exactly what happened on the day I married Mary.”
“Sir? What exactly are you asking me to find?” Matthew responded, his voice cautious.
“For starters, I want to know if Alexia was there. I need to know if she spoke to Mary and what was said. Emma might know more, but I’ll handle that part.
“Sir, you already know Alexia was there. She came to see you before the wedding…
Matthew’s words echoed in Maximus’s ears. It was true–he had forgotten that Alexia had come to him on the day of the wedding. She had asked him not to marry Mary, even offering to quit her job to make things easier for him. But Maximus, wrapped up in his complicated relationship with both women, had dismissed her plea. He had known that Mary would be his wife in name, but Alexia would remain by his side whenever he wanted. Alexia had known, too, and by not resigning, she had silently agreed to become his mistress. She had stormed out of the room in a fit of rage, and from then on, he hadn’t seen her until the reception.
“Even so, Matthew,” Maximus continued after a pause, “I want to know if she said anything to Mary. I need to know what happened.”
“I’ll look into it, sir. But it’s been almost four years. It might take time.”
“And Matthew, don’t breathe a word of this to Alexia.
“Of course, sir. This is strictly between us.”
Meanwhile, at the airport, Catherine and Peter boarded the private plane. Mary was already settled into her seat, fast asleep from exhaustion. Peter observed her quietly, his heart aching for the woman who had been mistreated by his brother. If he hadn’t been so immature back then, the woman before him might have been his wife, and none of this would have happened.
“My dear, how is she doing?” Catherine asked softly as she took her seat beside him.
“She looks worn out. I think seeing her grandfather will do her some good. Being at the vineyards will help her heal,” Peter replied, his voice filled with quiet resolve.
“I need your help with her, Peter. Your energy is contagious, and you might be able to lift her spirits.
“What process are you talking about?” Peter asked, frowning slightly.
“I’ve decided to support her decision to divorce Maximus. I’ll provide her with the best lawyer to make the separation as smooth and quiet as possible. If I can help it, I don’t want her to ever have to go back to him.”

Peter looked at his grandmother in surprise. “Why the sudden change of heart?”
Catherine’s expression darkened. “Because, my son, can no longer ignore what Maximus has done. He’s crossed the line. He’s hurt and humiliated her, and who knows what else. I can’t stand by and let him destroy her life any further.”
“Grandma,” Peter began, shocked by her bluntness, you never speak like this.”
