Chapter 0543
Peter watched as Celeste stepped out of the small house. The scene felt surreal. Not long ago, she had been in their home–her home. A place where she could live comfortably And now, here she was, in the modest house he had given her as a gesture to make her happy. A house he had hoped she wouldn’t need to use except for occasional
visits.
His eyes lingered on her face, noticing the doubt etched into her expression, before dropping to her small three- month baby bump. Their children. ‘My children. Dear God, I’ve lost so much over one stupid mistake.‘
“You could have told me you were coming!” a soft but firm voice snapped him out of his thoughts. “Celeste… I… Why did you leave the house? That’s your home!” Peter struggled to find the right words.
“Peter, I’m on my way to work. If you want to talk about the babies, I’ll be done at 7 p.m. We can talk then, but I can’t be late now.”
“Where do you work? I can drive you.”
“Thanks, but it’s not necessary.‘
“Celeste, please. I’m already here. We could talk on the way.. Please.”
“Peter, let me make this clear: just because you’re here doesn’t mean I’ll change my life. I’ve already done that once, and look where it got me. This is my routine now, and I don’t need you to disrupt it. I’ve told you when and where I’ll be free. If you want to talk, let me know, and we’ll meet in the evening.”
“Celeste Johnson!” Peter raised his voice in frustration.
“I heard you. And I’ve seen you. No need to shout. I’m leaving now, Peter.”
Celeste placed a hand on her chest, steadying herself. She knew that man still had a hold on her heart, but her dignity–and her babies–came first. She couldn’t let her world stop just because Peter had decided he wanted to talk. If he wanted to discuss their children, he’d have to wait, respect her schedule, and check if she was available. She’d already given up everything for what felt like a dream, only to be faced with a painful reality.
“Celeste, I know you’re angry with me. I know I broke my promises. I failed you. Just give me a moment to explain what happened, please…”
“Peter, I didn’t say I wouldn’t talk to you. I said we could talk in the evening. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to catch my bus, and I’m already running late.”
“Let me take you. Just tell me where, and I’ll drive you.‘
Celeste glanced at her watch, realizing he wasn’t going to let her leave so easily. She didn’t want to make a scene or draw unnecessary attention from her neighbors, especially with the luxury car Peter was driving. It wasn’t something that would go unnoticed.
“Fine. You win. Drive me, but I’m warning you–this doesn’t mean anything.”
“Thank you. I’ll take you there and wait to pick you up when you’re done.”
“No! I’ve told you I don’t want gossip at my workplace.”
“Alright. I’ll just drop you off then.”
“Good. I work at the Royce Ceramic and Redmond Print Museum.”

The silence in the car was stifling. Peter wracked his brain, trying to find a way to start a conversation. During their time together, they’d rarely argued. Celeste had always been calm and sweet, even during the hardest times -her recovery and rehabilitation. Peter had cared for her with unwavering love and dedication, always finding ways to make her smile, even on her worst days. That’s why it had been so confusing, even for him, when he began to lose interest. She never saw it coming, and, truthfully, neither had he.
The drive was short. Peter’s car, as expected, ensured Celeste would make it to work on time. But two blocks from her workplace, she spoke up.
“Drop me off here, please.”
“We’re so close. Just two more blocks.
