Chapter 0547
“Marcus? Are you awake?” Frederick asked as he walked into the room.
“Yes! Do you have the information I asked for?” Marcus replied, sitting up in bed.
“I do… but after going through everything again, I think someone else should be here,” Frederick said cautiously.
“Who?”
“Maximus Palmer. He’s the head of the Palmer family. Although Leonardo is still around, to be honest, I don’t know how he’d handle what I’m about to show you.”
“Is it necessary?”
“Only if you don’t want to carry the heavy burden of truth all by yourself.”
“Frederick, I’m not in the mood for games. Is it necessary for him to be here?”
“Yes.”
Frederick’s response was short but firm. He knew he had let Marcus down in the same way Peter had. He’d taken a quick look at the information in the briefcase, of which there were two copies, thinking Marcus would be the one to review it first. The original plan had been to avenge their friend, but things had spiraled to the point they found themselves at now. Peter already bore the weight of that truth. If he had left the information to be found, it was because he was prepared to carry the crushing reality it revealed.
“Call him!”
“Okay. Have you taken your pain medication?”
“Yes.”
“Good. Does Valerie know you’re here?”
“I suppose so.”
“Marcus, you can’t keep doing this. I know you’re upset with her, but this isn’t the way to fix things in a marriage. You need to understand that Valerie is dealing with the struggles of pregnancy. Everything she faces feels more intense right now. It’s not like she wants it to be this way. But let me ask you something.”
“Mmm…”
“What would happen, hypothetically speaking, if Valentina came back? If one day, she and Peter–your son, now an adult–showed up at your doorstep?”
“That’s impossible to begin with.”
“I said hypothetically. What would happen? How would you react? You loved your first wife with all your heart. Peter was going to be your firstborn. How would you feel?”
“I already told you, that’s impossible.”
“Marcus, I’m asking you again. What would happen? Don’t answer me–just think about it. What would it mean for your life if they were alive?”
“You’ll find the answer. Once you do, you’ll probably understand your wife better.”
“Frederick, no doubt about it, you’re getting more creative with age.”

“No, I’m getting wiser. I’ve been by your side through everything. I’ve been with you through all of life’s ups and downs. That gives me the right to have an opinion.”
“Talk to Maximus. I won’t take no for an answer. If he can’t come, tell him we’ll go to his house. But this matter gets settled today.”
“Fine.”
Frederick left the room. His friend and lifelong companion–the last link to his past life–had learned how to reprimand him without actually doing it. Marcus was left alone with the question in his mind. Many times, back when he was single and alone, he had imagined that everything that had happened wasn’t real.
