Mary leaned her head against the car window, her face pale from the strain of the memories swirling in 

her mind. 

“Mary darling, I know the journey has been long, but once we’re settled, you’ll start to enjoy your 

your new home,” Catherine said gently from the passenger seat while Peter drove the black Maserati. 

Mary closed her eyes and vividly recalled her wedding day. She had chosen an exquisite halter–neck wedding dress made of lace and tiny pearls, leaving her arms and long neck exposed. Catherine and Emma had helped her get dressed. After a few days living in Maximus‘ house, she decided to go 

back to her natural brown hair. She wore it up with a delicate pearl tiara that matched her dress, giving her a charming touch. Her makeup was light and subtle but highlighted her features. This time, she wore a bold red lipstick that made her lips look fuller and sexier. 

As she looked in the mirror, she couldn’t believe that, nearly a year after arriving in Valentia, she was about to marry the man who drove her crazy and whom she was deeply in love with. She was excited but also sad, wishing her grandfather could have been there, though circumstances didn’t allow it. She had to suppress that longing. Looking at herself, she knew that nothing would be the same from now on. She had to become a good wife to this great man, work hard to live up to him, and do her best to make him proud. 

She opened her eyes and sighed, remembering how that day had been ruined. She had to plaster a big smile throughout the ceremony, even though her heart was shattered minutes before the wedding. 

How could she not feel sadness, remembering her wedding and what happened afterward? Not even a day into their marriage, and Maximus had already made it clear that he didn’t love her. They were together because of some deal between them. Mary always wondered, “What deal?” She had never made a deal with him. If she had agreed to marry him, it was because she was genuinely in love.. 

Peter glanced at her in the rearview mirror. “Are you alright, Mary?” 

“No, Peter, I’m not okay, but I’ll get over it. I always do,” she said, her voice filled with sadness. 

“Don’t worry. Things will be different at the vineyard. I’ll be here to help you through this.” 

After a long drive, they finally arrived at the Palmer mansion. The butler, Leopold, opened the door for Catherine, and Peter hurried to help Mary out of the car. 

“Leopold, please show the young ones to their rooms and check with the cook on the status of dinner,” Catherine instructed. 

“Yes, ma’am. Sir, ma’am, please follow me.” 

For Peter, the mansion was familiar, but for Mary, it was overwhelming. She had never been invited to the Palmer estate during her marriage. Maximus always found an excuse to keep her away from family gatherings, leaving her in Valeria–alone with Emma. As she took in the grandiose surroundings, she felt a pang of bitterness. How many other things had she been kept away from? 

Leopold showed them to their rooms, and as soon as they were settled, Mary collapsed onto her bed. She was about to doze off when she heard a knock at the door. 

“Come in,” she called, too tired to sit up.

Peter entered, carrying a small bottle. “I remembered that when you used to feel tired or sick, you liked soaking in lavender baths. I brought some essence for you, so you can take a relaxing bath.”
