Maximus didn’t want to admit it, but Leonardo had been right. Alexia was impossible to please. Everything he did seemed to provoke her wrath, just as Mary’s presence once had provoked his. The similarities unnerved him. 

Without realizing it, he had parked outside Matthew’s house. His loyal assistant and confidant, Matthew, had a knack for grounding him. Despite never marrying or having children, Matthew always seemed to know exactly what to say. 

Maximus rang the bell, and Matthew opened the door almost immediately. 

“Maximus? Is everything alright?” 

“No, Matthew,” Maximus admitted, his exhaustion evident. “I just didn’t know where else to go. Can I come in?” 

“Of course. Come in.” Matthew gestured him inside. 

As they sat in Matthew’s inviting living room, Maximus allowed himself a small smile. “Your house is always so warm. My home… it’s not like this. It used to be, back when..” 

“With Mary?” Matthew finished gently. 

Maximus said, his voice tinged with regret. “She brought light to that mansion. And it was smaller than the house I have now, yet it felt so full of life.” 

“It’s not about the size of the home, Maximus. It’s about the people you share it with. You made a choice for your son, and at the time, you thought it was the right one.” 

“He’s my everything, Matthew. When I hold him, I feel like he gives me back my life. Can you imagine what he’ll be like when he grows up?” 

“He’ll take the reins of Palmer Group someday,” Matthew replied with a reassuring smile. “If you teach him well, he’ll combine your experience with his youthful energy. You’ll be unstoppable.” 

“I hope so, Matthew. I’m already so tired, and I’ve just returned to the family. How do you manage it?” 

Matthew chuckled. “I focus. And I don’t have a wife or children to think about–that helps. But you sacrifice a personal life to be good at this.” 

Maximus nodded thoughtfully. “What would I do without you? How’s my father treating you? 

Matthew’s face betrayed nothing. “The way Leonardo always does.” 

Maximus smiled bitterly. “I miss Peter. We weren’t close, but at least he had the guts to insult me back. No one else dares.” 

“They’re afraid of being fired,” Matthew replied dryly. 

“Fair point,” Maximus conceded. “But that’s not why I came here. I need help, Matthew. If I don’t get it, I might strangle my wife one day. You know what I did to Mary. I can’t let that happen again. I regret it every day. I never found her, but I want to change for my son and my wife. Do you know anyone who can help me with my anger?” 

“I’ll find someone,” Matthew promised. “You’re looking for a psychologist, right?” 

“Yes. One of those doctors. I need it.” 

“Give me a day. Do you prefer morning or evening appointments?” 

“Preferably in the late afternoon or evening, I’ll do my best to be there.”

“Thank you, Matthew! Being here really helped me…” 

“But we only talked about trivial things…” 

“That’s exactly what I needed. Now, I just want to go home and hug my son.” 

“Well then, go home and hug your son.” 

“Thank you!” 

Maximus returned home that night, heading straight for his son’s nursery. But when he found the crib empty, his heart leaped in fear. He hurried to find the nanny, who assured him the baby was with Alexia.
