Chapter 0576
“Marcus… I think I need to be honest with you,” Valerie said softly.
Marcus closed his eyes, bracing himself for the truth he already suspected.
“Marcus, please forgive me. I know I haven’t been reasonable lately. I know I’ve seemed obsessed with Peter, but today… today Peter showed up at the house. He’s not dead, Marcus. He’s alive!”
Marcus continued staring out the window, but Valerie saw his fist clench tightly at his side. Her words had clearly struck a nerve.
“So, he’s alive. And what are you planning to do about it, Valerie? Why did you go to see him?” Marcus asked, turning to face her, his voice calm but laced with frustration.
“Did you already know?” Valerie asked, startled.
“Yes! I asked him to tell you himself. I didn’t think it was fair for him to keep that from you,” Marcus admitted, his frustration surfacing
“Marcus! Why didn’t you tell me yourself?”
“For this, Valerie! You’re pregnant–doesn’t that register with you? I’ve been patient, but the way you’ve been acting lately… I don’t even recognize you. For twenty years, we’ve built a life together. Isn’t that enough? What were you hoping to achieve by going to see him? What did you expect him to say?”
“Marcus, I don’t understand why you’re so upset. I just told you Peter is alive! Alive! Do you even understand what that means?”
“And so what if he’s alive? What does that change? Tell me, Valerie—are you going to ask me for a divorce and run off with him?”
“Marcus Bartz!”
“I’ve tried to be patient, Valerie. I’ve tried to see this objectively, to understand that this is a shock for you. But it’s a shock for me too. You know I’ve never forgiven myself for not protecting him better. I felt guilty for falling in love with you, for marrying you. But you always said Peter would have been happy for us. Well, guess what? He’s not!”
“Marcus, you don’t need to talk to me like that,” Valerie said, her voice trembling with anger.
“Like what, Valerie?” Marcus asked, his voice steady but firm. “I’m just laying things out clearly. If you don’t want to stay with me and would rather go after Peter, at least wait until our children are born. Think about them, if nothing else. Like I said yesterday- and I’ll say it again–they’re still forming inside you. All these highs and lows, these emotions, you’re passing them on to them.”
“Marcus, I never said I wanted that!” Valerie responded firmly.
“You don’t have to say it–your actions speak for themselves. You know what? Let’s drop this. I just want you and my children to be okay. If we keep talking about this, we’re only going to end up fighting.”
“Marcus… I…”
“Please, Valerie,” Marcus said, his voice softening. “Let’s just wait for the doctor to come and check on you. Knowing the babies are okay puts me at ease. Seeing you calm does, too. Let’s not make things worse.”
