Chapter 0591
Chapter 0591
Valerie left the study and headed to her bedroom, her mind racing with everything Serenity had said. It was one thing to hear advice from people like Camille and Emma, telling her it made no sense to cling to the past, but it was entirely different to hear it from her own daughter.
Life seemed so unfair. As a young woman, she had chosen to love Maximus, and it had gone horribly wrong. leaving her heart and soul shattered. He hadn’t been the best choice–but what could she expect? She was only 19 when she married him.
Thinking back, Peter had entered her heart even earlier, ever since Grandma Catherine had introduced them. At the time, she hadn’t been able to decide clearly and had ended up choosing Maximus. Now, decades later, she found herself in the same position, having chosen Marcus over Peter. The difference this time was the reason behind her choice.
‘I’m sorry, Marcus. It’s not you–it’s me. It’s me and all my bad decisions,‘ she thought bitterly to herself.
At Frederick’s house, Marcus lay in bed, shifting uncomfortably as he tried to find a position that would let him sleep. He missed holding his wife, missed resting his hands on her rounded belly–the belly that carried their children. The memory of the last time he did so filled him with pain. Maybe it hadn’t been enough. Maybe he had neglected her. Perhaps he had given her reasons to doubt his love.
‘Damn it, Marcus! Where is this all going to end?‘ he muttered inwardly.
Turning to look out the window, he caught sight of the moonlight streaming into the room. His thoughts drifted back to the life he’d had before he met Valerie, before he even knew she existed. Back then, his heart had been dead, his existence driven by vengeance. His sole purpose had been to avenge his family and then join them in death. Everything had changed when Peter came into his life–a lonely boy with a distant gaze, yet curious and friendly.
‘Love has strange ways of showing up,‘ Marcus thought, ‘but it also has painful ways of leaving. Maybe this was karma catching up to him, taking away the one thing he loved most: Valerie.
A faint smile crossed his lips as a bitter thought settled in his mind, ‘It’s over. I always knew you’d come, karma. At least you didn’t touch my children.‘
That thought brought him an unexpected sense of peace. As sleep overtook him, Marcus knew exactly what he needed to do next.
[Back at Valerie’s house]
“Valerie, may I come in?”
“Come in, Camille.”
“How did it go?

“Badly. Serenity adores her father. She couldn’t understand me–she wouldn’t even let me explain,” Valerie said, her voice heavy with emotion.
“It’s natural, Valerie. The only man Serenity will ever recognize as her father is Marcus. He’s been her father her entire life, except for the first two years. Valerie, it hurts me to see this family breaking apart. I’ve given you your space, but I don’t see how this will get better.”

“As Marcus said, we’ll take some time apart, at least until the babies are born. After that, we’ll make the final decision.”
What Valerie didn’t know was that Marcus had already made that decision, and there would be no turning back. He had decided with his head, not his heart–because Valerie’s heart had never truly belonged to him. Marcus was grateful for the time they’d spent together, but he also believed life would never forgive him for his past actions. The only solace he had was knowing that karma had spared his children.
“Valerie, what are you planning to do about all this?” Camille asked carefully.
“I need to find him. I need to talk to him again.”
