“I’m fine. Really fine. I feel calmer now. Frederick, I need you to contact my lawyer.” 

“Your lawyer? What for?” 

“I want him to file for divorce,” Marcus said bluntly.. 

“What?! Marcus, what did you just say?” Frederick exclaimed, nearly dropping the pan he was holding. 

“You heard me. Just help me contact him, and I’ll handle the rest.” 

“Marcus, no. Explain this to me. Why are you making this decision?” 

“Frederick, I’ve spent 15 years living in fear that Valerie would find out who I really am. I’ve spent those same years ignoring the obvious. Did you really think what we did in the past wouldn’t catch up with us? I’m certain this is my reckoning, I don’t regret anything, but no crime goes unpunished.” 

“Marcus, what’s happening now has nothing to do with the past.” 

“It has everything to do with it! I’m just grateful none of this has reached my children.” 

“You really think this is karma?” 

“What else could it be? It’s obvious. In the past, I sought justice, and the price I was meant to pay never came until now. Nobody tells you how karma will strike, but now know. I lost a wonderful woman and my beloved son! Frank was our karma. Peter and I made him suffer. I took his finger and his ear; Peter blinded him. I eventually found him living in filth and took him to a hospice to die. 

“You think those actions wouldn’t have consequences? Of course they would, Frederick. But as I said, I’m grateful 

children are untouched by this. They are my life, my world. If sacrificing my marriage means protecting them so be it.”

Marcus’s decision to divorce weighed heavily on Frederick, but he knew that once Marcus made up his mind, it was almost impossible to sway him. Despite his deep reservations, Frederick decided to try one last thing- something he never thought he’d have to do. 

After a quiet breakfast where Marcus appeared unnervingly calm while sipping his coffee, Frederick cleared the table and left the house. He drove to a place he hadn’t imagined himself going, determined to make one final attempt. 

[At Valerie’s house) 

“Frederick, what are you doing here? Did something happen to Marcus?” Valerie asked, her voice tinged with 

worry. 

“Can we talk in private?” 

“Of course. Let’s go to Marcus’s study.” 

The two walked to the study, and Valerie closed the door behind them. 

“Tell me, Frederick, what’s going on?” 

“Valerie, I should be asking you that. I’ve known you since your days in Hesperia. You and I have always had a good relationship. You’ve even come to me for advice, and ve been so proud of the strong, determined woman I saw. But now… I don’t know what I’m seeing anymore.” 

“Frederick, are you talking about Marcus leaving the house?
