“Camille, what’s wrong? You look pale.” 

“It’s nothing, Emma. I need to speak to Valerie. Someone is here to see her. Could you bring some coffee?” 

“Of course!” 

Camille opened the door to Valerie’s room. Valerie was already standing, staring out at the garden. She had gotten dressed. 

“Someone’s here to see you, dear.” 

“Who?” 

“A man. He says he’s Marcus’s lawyer.” 

“Lawyer?” 

“Yes, dear… a lawyer.” 

Valerie didn’t need to hear more. She immediately understood what was happening. As with so much of her life, good things never seemed to last. 

“I’m coming,” Valerie said calmly. 

“Honey, should I call Marcus to find out what this is about?” 

“No, Camille, it’s not necessary. Take him to the study. I’ll meet him there.” 

“Alright…” 

Camille was surprised by how composed Valerie seemed. Whatever this man had come to discuss, it was clear Valerie had already anticipated it. 

“Sir…” n 

“Angelo. Angelo Foster. I’m handling Mr. Bartz’s legal matters in Valentia.” 

“Mr. Angelo, Mrs. Valerie is expecting you in the study. Please follow me this way.” 

When they reached the study, Valerie was already waiting. She took one look at the man in the suit, took a deep breath, and let it out. 

“Mrs. Bartz, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’m Angelo Foster, Mr. Bartz’s lawyer.”

“What do you need?” Valerie asked directly. 

“Mr. Marcus Bartz has requested to initiate divorce proceedings…” 

Valerie’s eyes widened. Though she had sensed this was coming, hearing it out loud made it undeniably real. “On what grounds?” 

“He’s seeking an amicable divorce due to irreconcilable differences. The document outlines all the terms, including the division of property, his responsibilities as a father and former spouse, alimony, and anything else that needs review.” 

“Am I supposed to read it now and sign it?” 

“No, not at all. You’ll need your lawyer to review it. If there’s anything you disagree with, Mr. Bartz has said the

“How about starting with the fact that I don’t want a divorce?” 

“If that’s the case… it would lead to a long and costly trial. If Mr. Bartz wants to separate, once this filing is initiated, only he can withdraw it. That’s something you’ll need to discuss with him. For now, that’s all from my side. I’ll wait to hear from you soon.” 

The lawyer didn’t linger. Emma showed him to the door wille Camille stayed behind in the study with Valerie. She seemed frozen in place, her trembling hands gripping the documents she’d just received. A bucketful of cold reality had just been dumped on her. She knew Marcus’s character well enough to understand this wasn’t something he had taken lightly. They would have to talk, and soon. 

“Camille, can 

you go pick up John from school? I need to see Marcus immediately. I’m not leaving Frederick’s house until I speak with him.” 

“Sweetheart, let the driver take you, or call Marcus and ask him to come here. You can’t drive in this state.” 

“Marcus won’t answer my calls, texts, or emails. So if I have to go and plant myself in front of Frederick’s house, I’ll do it!” 

“What’s going on, Valerie?” 

“Do you know what this is?” Valerie waved the documents in the air.
