Marcus wasn’t sure where to sit. Valerie’s almond eyes studied him with curiosity, her expression trying to make sense of his strange behavior. She didn’t understand what was happening or why.
“For God’s sake, Marcus! Just sit down already and explain what all this means!” Valerie snapped, pointing to t
the
folder of documents.
Finally, Marcus sat down in the chair across from the desk, ending up close to her. He turned to face her, his gaze lingering on those eyes that had always driven him crazy–but now filled him with pain.
“Val… I didn’t want things to get to this point, but…”
“But what, Marcus? What? Damn it! You’re asking me for a divorce!”
“Yes, Valerie. And believe me, it’s the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make.”
Valerie’s eyes filled with tears. As Marcus spoke, word by word, the reality of his decision sank in. He wasn’t unsure he had already made up his mind.
“Why, Marcus? Why now?”
Η
“My dear Valerie, deep down, we both know the truth. Even if you won’t admit it–you don’t love me.”
“Marcus, I… I love you…”
“Val… You don’t love me. At least not the way someone loves their partner. I know it. I saw it in your eyes, in how you reacted to Peter.”
“I’m just confused, that’s all…”
“No, you’re not confused,” Marcus said, his voice firm as he turned both his and her chairs to face each other directly.
He took her hands in his, speaking with calm control to avoid any stress that might harm the babies. Her hands. were soft but trembling, and Marcus gently pulled her closer.
“Valerie, the love you have for me is the kind born of obligation, not choice. You don’t love me because you met me and something about me drew you in. I’ve always known that. What brought us together was Serenity. And look at her now–she’s a grown woman, strong and independent. The bond we shared came from that little two- year–old girl, nothing more.”
“That’s not true! I love you. After all these years together…
“All these years together mean nothing compared to what you might have dreamed of sharing with Peter. Think about it, Valerie. If nothing had happened to him, you’d be with him now. You’d have built a family together, had children of your own-”
Stop
it! Don’t put words in my mouth that I never said!”
“I’m not saying anything that isn’t true. When I came into your life, mine was a complete mess. You put it back together and made me happy. When I finally let myself fall in love with you, I had no one else left to love. It’s no secret I was married before and loved my wife and child with all my heart. But I’ve let them go. You, Valerie–you never let go.”
“Marcus, it’s not like that… Things didn’t happen the way you think they did. I love you! And no, I wasn’t forced into this. I’ve always known you weren’t Peter. You’re Marcus, and I love every part of you. I love how you are, love every day we’ve spent together. It’s just that-”
