Three weeks had passed since Valerie had signed the divorce papers. Officially, she was now a free woman. John had been sad when he learned his parents were separating. At almost six years old, he didn’t fully understand what a separation meant. In his mind, it was something like what Ethan was experiencing his grandfather now lived in another country but still visited him every weekend without fail. John believed that separations worked the same way, just like Ethan’s grandfather had said: when the school term ends, they’ll all be together again. 

Valerie had to summon strength from places she didn’t know existed to stay calm. She did it mostly for her children. Since the day she signed the papers in front of Marcus, they hadn’t spoken. Any issues regarding the kids were handled by Camille or Serenity. Another blow of reality hit when she realized her gynecologist appointment was today. She was now just over six months pregnant, but Dr. Baker had been at a conference and had only returned the day before. 

“Valerie, honey, you don’t have to go alone. I can go with you,” Camille offered. 

“Camille, it’s fine. I can handle this. I’m a big girl, remember?” Valerie joked, gesturing to her round belly. 

“Let the driver take you. I don’t want you driving in your condition,” Camille insisted, worry etched on her face. 

Though she was legally divorced–having received the official document a week earlier–Marcus hadn’t left her completely unsupported. It felt as though he had simply gone on a “long trip.” Valerie tried to carry on with her life, focusing on keeping her elderly mother figures calm. Now, she faced the consequences of her choices and actions, just as she had years ago when she first arrived in Hesperia. She had considered returning to her home country, but with her current state and the occasional complications she’d been experiencing, it wasn’t a viable option. 

Meanwhile, Marcus had been trying to get in touch with Valerie. He knew what day it was; it was marked on his phone calendar. But she hadn’t answered any of his calls. He was on the verge of going to the clinic to wait for her when Serenity showed up at Frederick’s house. 

‘Dad, can we talk?” 

“Serenity, of course, sweetheart. What’s on your mind?“, 

“What have you thought about all of this?” 

All of what?” 

“What’s happening between you and Mom. I know you both love and miss each other… but neither of you wants to make the first move. John’s sad. He’s struggling to eat, and it’s hard to get him to do his homework. I think you need to have a serious talk with him. Dad, I’m trying to take care of John, but this is too much for me. I’m trying to handle your separation maturely, but don’t think it’s easy for me either. I thought the divorce was just a step- way for you both to think things through. Some couples do that and then get back together. But I don’t see that happening with you two.” 

‘Serenity, I’m so sorry you’ve been dragged into this. This is something your mom and I shouldn’t have taken lightly, especially because of you and your siblings. You’ve been so mature, and I’m so proud of you. I promise I’ll do everything I can to work things out with your mother.” 

“Dad, I don’t want you to just talk to Mom. I want us to be a family again, like before. Please… I need that.” Marcus got up and hugged his daughter: As he held her, he was reminded of the hugs he used to give her when she was just a little toddler, barely three years old. Valerie had never seen it, but he used to melt every time Serenity toddled around his office. Many times, she ruined important papers, spilled milk or julce on documents, and he often came close to losing his patience. But something about her always calmed him. Serenity had been his second chance at the family he thought he’d never have.
