“Marcus…” 

“Valerie, please, let me finish explaining- 

“No!” she interrupted, her voice sharp. “I’ve already heard enough. I get it–you just want my damn signature.” 

She stood abruptly, grabbed a pen, yanked the folder from his hands, and signed every paper he had placed before 

her. 

“Here it is. With this, you and I are nothing. Now get out of my damn house.” 

“Val. This isn’t what I wanted. I didn’t want it to end like this…” 

“Oh, no? Then what? Do you want one last roll in the sheets? In case you’ve forgotten, Marcus, I’m heavily pregnant with your children! You sent your lawyer, Marcus. Don’t try to feed me cheap excuses now. You want to run? Go ahead! Run! I wish you and Peter had never shown up in my life. I wish I’d stayed alone. At least then, I’d only suffer from not being loved–not from loving the wrong people. I don’t even know which one of you is worse.” 

Her voice cracked, but her fury didn’t waver. “Though, if I’m being honest, Marcus, at least my first husband was predictable. He hit me in the beginning just like my father. He punished me with his absence–just like when I was a child. At least I can say it was all a misunderstanding But with you and Peter, there’s no misunderstanding It’s just the truth. You both waltzed into my life, made me fall in love, and then left. You say you love me, but when it really matters–when you’re supposed to love me you leave.” 

Marcus stared at her, speechless. A part of him broke. He had never wanted to hurt her; his decision had been made to free her, to bring her happiness. But seeing her pain now, he wondered if he’d made a terrible mistake. 

“Fine, Marcus,” Valerie spat, tossing the folder back at him “I signed your damn papers. Now you deal with John. You tell him you won’t be coming home, that you’re not coming back from this ‘trip‘ you’ve been on. Explain it to him because I won’t. And yes, Marcus, I’ll admit it–I kissed Peter in this fancy office of yours. And I wanted more. But you know what? Nothing happened beyond that. Partly because of him, partly because of me. But in the end, my life is the same damn mess it’s always been. It reminds me, every day, that I wasn’t born under a lucky star. Years have passed, but it’s clear–I’m still the same pathetic woman who showed up here and ended up alone.” 

“Valerie, please. I don’t want it to end this way. Please…” 

“No, Marcus. I’m the one who’s been saying please to everyone. I went looking for Peter to close that chapter of my life, and he left anyway. I didn’t want anything more, but no one believed me. Everyone thinks I’m too immature to handle it. Just go. Take your damn papers and leave. Talk to your kids. Explain the situation, because I won’t. We’re done talking.” 

Valerie turned and stormed toward the door. She was angry hurt, and on the verge of tears, but she refused to cry in front of him. Once again, she felt like that desperate young woman who had arrived in Hesperia with Serenity in her belly. But unlike then, she had a roof over her head and four children to care for now. She wasn’t alone–but she felt like it. 

Grabbing the doorknob, she flung the door open and stormed out, slamming it behind her. 

When Valerie reached her bedroom, she collapsed onto the bed, pressed a pillow over her face, and let herself cry. She screamed and cursed her luck. Since childhood, she’d always been alone, always marked by the death of her mother, always judged by her father. The only people who had truly loved her were her grandparents.
