Chapter 6505
Chapter 0605
Serenity was frustrated. She had hoped things would go differently, but realistically, she knew her mother wouldn’t take her decision well. If anything, Serenity doubted that even explaining her true reasons for leaving would get Valerie’s approval. She packed a small suitcase with a few changes of clothes, determined to leave before her mother returned home. However, her plan was thwarted when she ran into her parents walking into the foyer together.
Marcus was carrying bags with the café logo from earlier, clearly containing her mother’s favorite desserts. The sight confused Serenity. They were supposed to be divorced and just a short while ago, they’d been arguing.
“Serenity, what’s with the suitcase?” Marcus asked, his tone serious as his gaze fixed on her.
“Dad, like I said, I’m moving out,” Serenity replied, matching his gaze with equal intensity.
Marcus hated that look–that look Serenity gave him when she was angry. He’d seen it in her since she was a child, and for some reason, it always bothered him. Now he understood why. It was the same look Maximus gave. “Serenity,” Valerie said gently, stepping forward. “Your father and I talked, and he explained why you want to leave. I know I can’t stop you, but I’d like to talk with you first.”
“Mom, I don’t want to argue or upset you…”
“I promise, that won’t happen. Let’s go to the study. I just want to talk.”
“Go ahead, sweetheart. Listen to your mom,” Marcus said, heading upstairs. “I’m going to check on John.”
Serenity followed Valerie down the hall to the study. Once the door closed, Valerie took a deep breath and began speaking
“Serenity, I know things between your father and me haven’t been good lately. But those are issues we’ll work out between us.”
“Mom, that’s not why I’m leaving…”
“I know,” Valerie interrupted softly. “But I wanted to make that clear to you first.”
Serenity sighed. “Mom, my sister is pregnant. She and I have built a good relationship. She’s alone, and Maximus
.well, he’s doing his best, but let’s face it–he’s not exactly great at this kind of thing. She needs her sister.”
“I’m surprised you and Laura get along so well…” Valerie admitted, her voice tinged with disbelief.
“She’s different from her mother, Mom. Alexia never cared for her. That’s why I feel like I have to be there for her, especially now. Laura’s never had a positive female figure in her life. Lucius was her only support, and look how that turned out.”
Valerie’s expression softened, though her worry remained. I’m concerned about you, Serenity. You’re my daughter, and I don’t feel comfortable with you leaving university. But your father is right–you’re a grown woman. You know what’s best for you, and I can’t force you to stay.
“Mom, I’m not leaving forever. I just want to be closer to her. I promise I’ll come home. I didn’t even pack all my things–I just need to be there for Laura. You have Camille and Emma–they’re like mothers to you. But Laura doesn’t have anyone else but me.”
“Did Maximus convince you to do this?”
“Maximus doesn’t even know yet. We decided to tell him gradually.”
