Maximus and Laura returned home after their quick stop at the dessert shop. As Maximus unloaded their purchases in the kitchen for the cook to store, he froze at the sight of Serenity sitting in the living room, suitcase beside her. His heart skipped a beat. Laura’s words earlier about Serenity moving in weren’t just speculation–they were true.

Serenity stood when she saw him. 

“Maximus, can we talk?” 

“Of course. What’s with the suitcase?” 

“I’ll explain in a moment. Can we speak in private?” 

“Sure… Let’s go to the study.” 

Maximus felt a strange intimidation from the look Serenity gave him. He recognized it–it was the same intense, piercing gaze he used during negotiations to unnerve his opponents. Once inside the study, Maximus closed the door, and Serenity took a seat before speaking 

“Maximus, I’ve left my parents‘ house. Laura needs me, and I wanted to ask if you have any issues with me living here.” 

“Serenity… I have no problem with it. In fact, I’m thrilled. But I’m concerned about your parents‘ reaction.” 

“They already know and have accepted my decision. I’ll also contribute to household expenses to cover my costs, she said firmly. 

“Serenity, you know that’s not necessary, right?” 

“I don’t want to be a burden.” 

Maximus, still standing, walked over to her and knelt to meet her at eye level. 

“Serenity, you could never be a burden to me. On the contrary, knowing you’ll be here makes me incredibly happy. If your parents are truly okay with it, I take it Marcus won’t try to break my face when he sees me, right?” 

“I don’t think so. I can’t say the same about Peter, but you should be safe.” 

“Good thing Peter’s thousands of miles away. Let’s hope that keeps the peace for now. Besides, he has his hands. full with Celeste’s rehabilitation.” 

“Is she doing that badly?” 

“She can’t walk…” 

“God. No one at the school talks about it.” 

“They claimed they’d take care of everything, but it’s been nothing but empty promises. Peter is looking after her himself, and honestly, I think that’s for the best.”

“Good.” 

“There’s something I want to show you,” Maximus said, his tone taking on a mysterious edge. 

“For me?” 

“Yes. Come with me. There are still a few finishing touches needed, but I think you’ll like it.” 

Father and daughter left the study and made their way upstairs. Maximus stopped in front of a door, pulled out a key, and handed it to Serenity. 

“This was the best they could do on such short notice.” 

Serenity unlocked the door and stepped inside. The room was spacious and beautifully designed–a sanctuary tailored for a woman. It wasn’t overly feminine or pink, but modern and minimalist in white with contemporary furnishings. It felt personal yet versatile.
