Chapter 0062
Chapter 0062
The following morning, Matthew woke up with a pouring headache. He had spent the entire night trying to figure out how to end Alexia’s contract without sparking a full–blown disaster. He knew very well that once he informed her, Alexia would lose control, and he dreaded being the one to deliver the news, given that he was technically her superior.
Meanwhile, Maximus also woke with a throbbing head the result of his excessive drinking the night before. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, trying to alleylate the pain in his temples. After a long shower, he dressed in an impeccable black suit, looking as imposing as ever. He glanced at his phone, tempted to call his grandmother’s house to check on Mary, but he still couldn’t find the right words. Instead, he pocketed his phone, choosing to avoid thinking about it for the moment.
Emma prepared breakfast, but Maximus only grabbed cup of coffee. She had assumed that after hearing the full story of what had transpired at the wedding, he would immediately go to fetch Mary. But instead, he appeared to be hesitating, as if Alexia still had a hold on his heart, even after learning the truth of how she had treated Mary from the very beginning.
Maximus arrived at the Palmer building, his second home, and took the private elevator that led directly to his office. As the doors were about to close, a slender hand slipped between them, stopping the elevator. It was Alexia, who stepped inside confidently Maximus hadn’t expected to see her so early, and irritation flashed across his face at her casual use of the private elevator–something reserved for the Palmer family and, occasionally, Matthew. But as his well–known girlfriend in the company, no one dared question her access.
Up until yesterday, Maximus had been blind to Alexia’s behavior. In the company, she wielded considerable influence, thanks to everyone assuming she was his long–term partner. No one, apart from Matthew, knew about his marriage to Mary or the fact that she was never part of the company’s affairs. The memory of how he had treated Mary during her first and only visit to the office filled him with guilt. ‘How much have I made you suffer, Mary?‘ he thought silently.
“Maximus! I didn’t think you’d come in today. I figured you’d be busy playing nurse to your ‘sickly wife,” “Alexia said sarcastically.
“She’s at my grandma’s house. They’ll take care of her better there. I have some business to handle here, but I’ll join her as soon as it’s done,” Maximus replied calmly.
“Maximus, how can you say that to me? Do you even care how much it hurts when you talk about being with her?” Alexia snapped, her eyes flashing with anger.
“I think we need to talk. Be in my office in ten minutes.” Maximus said, unable to hold back any longer.
“Maximus-”
The elevator bell chimed, signaling Alexia’s floor. She gave him a look of uncertainty but stepped out.
“Ten minutes,” Maximus repeated as the doors closed
When Maximus arrived at his floor, Matthew was waiting for him.
“Have you thought of a reason to terminate Alexia’s contract?” Maximus asked.
“Sir, the only valid reason is the truth. We no longer require her services, and there’s a conflict of

interest in her functions. We’ll offer her a generous severance package, enough to keep her afloat for at least a year without work,” Matthew suggested.
“Good,” Maximus replied.
At that moment, the door opened, and Alexia entered the office, walking with her usual confidence and pride. When she saw Matthew there, she assumed it had something to do with her bonus, earned from closing the Peterson deal.
“Alexia, I need you to hand over all your projects to Matthew. From now on, he’ll be taking over your responsibilities,” Maximus said, his tone steady but fin.
“What? Maximus, why?” Alexia’s eyes widened in disbelief.
“I’ve decided to terminat
your contract, Miss Levett
“What?” Alexia’s voice rose in anger.
“Miss Levett,” Matthew interjected calmly, “please don’t raise your voice. We’re all speaking respectfully, and I’d appreciate it if you did the same. It’s a matter of professional courtesy.”
nus! What’s going on? I worked tirelessly for you. We just closed the Peterson deal! You can’t do this to me. Let me guess, your little wifey asked for my head? Oh, no–this must be your grandma’s doing, right?” Alexia’s voice was a mixture of fury and disbelief.
“Alexia!” Maximus’s voice boomed, silencing her. “Accept it. I no longer want you in this company. Your parents have their own empire, and you’ll inherit all of it. You don’t need to work here. And regardless, we’re offering you a compensation package that’ll keep you more than comfortable for at least a year.” “I don’t care about the money, Maximus! I care about you. I’m here for you,” Alexia insisted, her voice softening as she tried to appeal to him emotionally.
“That’s something we’ll discuss outside of this building. For now, start transferring all your work to Matthew. Matthew,” Maximus turned toward him, “has IT confiscated Alexia’s company equipment?”
Yes, señor. They’ve already taken her devices. All that’s left is for her to return her company phone,” Matthew replied, standing firm.
“Matthew, I’m not a thief. I don’t understand why I’m being treated like this. Maximus!” Alexia’s desperation was palpable.
“You’re not a thief, Alexia, which is why I’m handling this personally and not having security escort you out of the building,” Maximus said, his voice steady but final.
