Chapter 0061
“After we got Alexia out, the missus was ready to leave She didn’t want to marry you anymore. She was heartbroken. Your grandma asked me to go tell the judge to wait, and when I came back, your grandma had managed to convince her to go through with the wedding. I don’t know what they talked about, but the missus decided to stay.
Maximus sat there, feeling like the ground had been ripped out from under him. He had always prided. himself on his sharp instincts, but when it mattered most, he had failed spectacularly. He had destroyed the life of a woman whose only crime had been loving him.
His mind raced through countless memories of how he had treated Mary over the years. She had been nothing but kind, trying her best to win his love, while he had continually shattered her heart.
“Emma,” Maximus’s voice was low, almost broken. “Why didn’t you say anything about how I was treating her?”
“It wasn’t my place, sir. And the missus made us promise never to speak of the wedding again. It pained her to remember it, and not long ago, she burned all the photos from that day.”
Maximus felt his chest tighten at the thought. Mary had been carrying this burden alone, reliving the pain of that day in silence.
“Please… leave me,” he said softly.
Emma hesitated for a moment, sensing the deep turmoil within him. “Sir… I shouldn’t say this, but you should talk to her. She loves you, and I believe you can still fix this. Don’t let her go.”
“Thank you, Emma, but I think it’s too late.”
Emma left the study, her heart heavy with the weight of their conversation. She didn’t understand what had changed in Maximus’s mind, but whatever had happened, it seemed like a turning point.
Around midnight, a car pulled up outside the mansion, Maximus watched from the window, a glass of whiskey in one hand, a cigar in the other. It had been years since he’d felt the need to indulge in such vices, but tonight, he needed something to calm the storm raging inside him..
As the person he’d been waiting for stepped out of the car, Maximus took his seat behind the desk and heard a knock at the door.
“Come in, Matthew.”
Matthew entered, carrying a USB drive. “Sir, I have the information you asked for,” he said, handing over the drive. “I think it’s important that you see what’s on it. There’s no audio, but the footage speaks. for itself.”
“Thank you, Matthew. Leave me for now.”
Maximus plugged the USB into his laptop, his heart racing as he opened the files. There were several videos, along with a report detailing who had accessed the hotel where the wedding took place,
including their times of arrival and departure

The first video showed Alexia storming out of the room where Maximus had spoken to her. He recognized the scene—he remembered their conversation vividly. But it was the next video that shattered whatever illusions he had left.
The footage showed Alexia walking down the hallway, speaking briefly to a maid before being directed to Mary’s room.
And then came the third video, the one that destroyed Maximus’s last thread of denial. He watched Alexia confront Mary, saw the way she grabbed her, and the way Mary cried. There was no audio, but the visuals were clear enough. Alexia had been the aggressor, and Mary had been left shaken and confused.
With a roar of frustration, Maximus hurled his whiskey glass across the room, watching it shatter against the wall. His chest heaved with anger as he realized the full extent of his cruelty. For more than three years, he had tormented a woman who had done nothing wrong.
