Chapter 0630
“Peter… What else are you planning to do?”
“Nothing. Just wait. My time, and Marcus’s time, is coming. He and I will have to pay for what we’ve done. But that, dear brother, won’t affect you,” Peter said, placing a hand on Maximus’s shoulder.
“Damn it, Peter! What the hell are you going to do?” Maximus demanded, his frustration boiling over.
“I’d suggest you change your surname yours and your family’s–once you decide who takes control of the company,” Peter said coldly. “One way or another, all the dirt surrounding the Palmer name will spread across the country. There won’t be a corner where people don’t know who the Palmer, Bartz, and Levett truly are.”
Maximus’s jaw tightened. “What did you do to Alexia? Did you kill her?”
“Maximus…. I am a killer, but I don’t kill women or children. Alexia is alive. She’s with Lucius. He thinks I don’t know, but I do. The best thing I could do for her was leave her with him. That woman was driving me insane. Lucius believes someone might come after her one day, but it won’t be me. Alexia’s life is punishment enough- she’s a quadriplegic. Killing her would be an act of mercy, and she doesn’t deserve that.”
“Peter, I can barely keep up with this mess. Don’t you think all of this is just… a massive tangle?”
“Maximus, haven’t you heard the saying, ‘The truth will set you free“? That’s what I’m doing–setting us free from the past. You’re not a Palmer anymore. You should take advantage of that. Spend your father’s final years with him. Live your life. The company has drained you for too long. Now you have your family back, and Diana Mendez is in Valentia. She seems like a good woman.”
Maximus’s eyes narrowed. “How the hell do you know about Diana?”
“She works for one of my companies. She’s extraordinary, Maximus. Clearly, you taught her well. She’s going to be the CEO of one of my enterprises.”
“Peter… does this mean not all the files you’re leaking are about revenge?”
“Exactly. Most of them are about exposing the truth–the truth about Catherine, Albert, Mary’s father, your father, our mother, and the properties Catherine handed over to Albert, which will eventually pass to Mary. Not everything is about vengeance. Some truths need to come out for things to change.”
“You know this will cause a lot of trouble down the line, Peter. You know how much damage exposing this will do.”
“Would you rather not know you have a father who’s been waiting for you for years? Would you rather not know Leonardo is a bastard? Would you prefer to live in ignorance? I wouldn’t. I’ve been recovering my memories, and I’m grateful to know I have family. I’m grateful for this time together, for everything I have. My only regret is losing Mary. She’s the only thing that still hurts.”
“Peter… I don’t fully agree with what you’ve done. But if I can’t stop it, I’ll just play my part.”
“Exactly. Do your part. The rest will take care of itself. Oh, and I’d suggest you look for Lucius. He’s in Switzerland. You’d have to be blind not to notice…”
“Notice what?”
“That Lucius looks like you. That young man is your son. I didn’t need a paternity test to know my son was mine when I met him. If you look at Lucius, it’s obvious. He’s your son. I don’t need to be a fortune teller to see that.”
