Chapter 0631
Maximus returned home after a long day, his thoughts weighed down by the countless decisions he had to make. As he walked through the house, he noticed his younger children quietly doing their homework at the dining table. Laura, as always, had stepped in to keep them on task. When he found her resting in her bedroom, he approached her bed, his voice gentle.
“My dear, how are you? How’s the baby doing?” he asked, sitting beside her.
“Everything’s fine, Dad,” Laura replied, her voice drowsy. I was just a little tired today. I missed Serenity, though.”
“Speaking of Serenity, where is she?” Maximus asked, his brow furrowing.
“She’s out with Alden. They went to have dinner since they didn’t get a chance to eat earlier.”
“Oh, I see. As long as she’s with Alden, I can rest easy.”
“He said he’d bring her home after dinner… Oh, by the way, there’s an older woman waiting for you in your study. She’s been there for a couple of hours. I told her she could come back tomorrow, but she insisted on waiting- Someone brought her coffee and cookies.”
“Did she say who she is? And why did you leave her in my study?” Maximus asked, curious.
“She said her name is Emma Fiore. I stayed with her for a bit, but I got so sleepy I had to leave. Sorry, Dad. I just realized I probably shouldn’t have left her alone.”
“Don’t worry, sweetheart. I’ll go see her now. She’s an old friend,” Maximus reassured her.
“Friend?”
“Yes. She used to work here before I moved to the house I bought for Alexia. After that, I lost touch with her.”
Maximus kissed Laura on the forehead and made his way to his study. As he opened the door, he saw the silhouette of an older woman standing by the window. Hearing the door, she turned instinctively.
“Maximus Palmer… It’s been a long time,” she said with a knowing smile.
“The same to you, Emma Fiore,” Maximus replied warmly.
“How have you been, Maximus? I’ve heard all sorts of things about you–good and bad.”
“Adjusting to my new life,” Maximus admitted, walking over to her. “Why don’t you sit down? We have a lot to talk about.”
“Oh, I agree.
Maximus watched her settle into a chair before sitting across from her. “Why did you leave, Ernma? When I returned to this house after moving Alexia, you were gone. I always wanted you to help me raise my kids.”
“Maximus, if I told you Alexia threw me out and cut off all support for my children, would you believe me?”
“She did that? Is that why you left?” Maximus’s voice rose in anger.
“Yes, that vile woman kicked me out, claiming I was too close to Mary. She said my presence would remind you of your past life with your ex–wife. So she threw me out without a single penny.
“I’m so sorry, Emma,” Maximus said, his voice filled with regret as he stood and walked to her side. He placed at comforting arm around her. “At the time, I was lost. Peter’s death, losing Mary, Alexia, my son–it all threw me into a storm. I lost sight of everything.”
