Chapter 0639
Maximus and Lucius entered the elevator in tense silence. As they walked down the long, sterile hallway, the scent of disinfectant lingered in the air. The bright, orderly surroundings only amplified the weight of the moment. Maximus’s thoughts wandered, flashing back to Lucius’s infancy–the tiny hands, the baby’s laugh, and those fleeting moments of innocence. A lump formed in his throat.
“This is it,” Lucius said, stopping in front of a door. “I’ll wait in the lounge inside. There’s a connecting door to her room, and if I hear anything suspicious, Maximus, I’ll personally throw you out.”
Maximus nodded, gripping the doorknob with trembling hands. He opened it and stepped inside. The first thing he saw was Alexia. Her blond hair framed a face that, despite the passage of time and her current state, still held remnants of the woman he had once considered the love of his life. Their eyes met, hers widening in surprise and slight panic.
“Maximus,” she said sharply. “What the hell are you doing here?”
“Hello, Alexia.”
“Hello, Maximus,” she sneered. “What is it? Can’t live without me and decided to come running?”
“Don’t flatter yourself, Alexia,” Maximus shot back. “I thought that after everything, your condition might have humbled you.”
“Maximus, this is who I am. Always have been. Always will be. So, tell me, why are you here? To gloat? Mock me?”
“No. I’m here for the truth.”
The truth? What truth?”
“Lucius. Tell me the truth about Lucius!” Maximus’s voice rose as he leaned over her, his fists pressing into the bed.
Alexia’s expression hardened, but her voice was eerily calm “Maximus, we’ve known each other long enough. If you’re here, it’s because you already know the truth. You just want me to confirm it.”
“Damn it, Alexia!” Maximus growled, the veins in his neck taut. “Can’t you for once in your life do something right? Just tell me the truth. Damn it!”
At that moment, the door burst open, and Lucius stormed in, his eyes blazing. “That’s enough, Maximus. Get out!”
Alexia, however, raised her hand weakly. “Lucius, stop. Maximus and I are talking. Don’t worry. He can’t hurt me more than I’ve already been hurt.”
“Mom…” Lucius hesitated, clenching his fists.
“Lucius, go find the doctor and tell them I’m skipping therapy today. I’m tired.”
Lucius’s jaw tightened, and his knuckles whitened. He knew his mother was dismissing him, and despite his frustration, he relented. Alexia always got what she wanted.
“Fine, Mom. But…” He glared at Maximus. “Don’t make me regret this.”
“Go, Lucius. Your father and I have a lot to discuss.”
Once they were alone, Alexia’s haughty demeanor softened Her eyes drifted to the window as she spoke, her voice quieter.
Chapter 0639
“We’ve been through so much, Maximus. I just want to die already, but Lucius won’t let me. Don’t think I’m blind to how much all of this costs. I see the worry in his eyes. He’s all I have now. He’s the only one who takes care of me”
Do they not matter much of this on yourself. All you think about is Lucius. What about
