Chapter 0540
Chapter 0640
“Would you have believed me?” Alexia’s bitter laugh echoed in the room. “Come on, Maximus. Your father was your idol. If it had been Peter, maybe you would’ve listened. But Leonardo? You would’ve done anything for him. Or am I wrong? For a while, I thought that by marrying you, the nightmare would end. But it got worse. Your father had more excuses to be around. You were always busy. Always distracted by her. Mary. And me? I was left to endure his abuse whenever he pleased.”
Maximus’s fists clenched as his chest heaved with rage. “You had the power to stop him. To stop Frank. But you didn’t. You gave them both that power.
“Did I have a choice, Maximus?” Alexia retorted, her voice trembling. “I was alone. You wouldn’t have believed
I had
peace. me. I convinced myself this was my life. Then Leonardo stopped coming around, and for a moment, I’ve been the worst woman, I know that. But didn’t I deserve happiness too? From the moment I made the mistake of falling for Gabriel, my life has been hell. Look at me now”
“You’re trying to make me pity you, Alexia!” Maximus roared.
“No! I want you to hate me! I want you to kill me! Look at me–do you think this is a life worth living?”
“You ordered the hit on my brother!” Maximus roared, his fists trembling with restrained fury.
“Yes! I did! And what of it?” Alexia spat, her eyes glinting with defiance.
“He lost everything because of your damn games, Alexia! He lost 20 years of his life! You want pity? You deserve nothing but to rot here in your misery.”
“Don’t you see?” Alexia snapped, her voice breaking. “Lucius wants to keep me in this cursed place no matter the cost. I’ve told him he can’t afford it. He needs to let me go… Maximus, I know you hate me, but I also know you still care about Lucius. He’s your son. Take him with you. Let me die here. I don’t want to burden him anymore he’s clinging to me out of guilt.”
Maximus’s jaw tightened as he tried to rein in his emotions “Alexia, for him–for the love I had for him when he was a baby, and for the memory of what we once were–I’ll keep paying for this hospital. I’ll do the same thing Peter wanted to do: ensure you’re cared for. But don’t ask me to take Lucius. He stopped seeing me as his father the moment your grandfather and my father poisoned his mind.”
“No!” Alexia screamed, her voice filled with anguish. “Let me die! I don’t want to live like this anymore!”
“I’m sorry, but no. I’m no killer.”
“Maximus,” she pleaded desperately, “you have to authorize my request for euthanasia.”
“No. And that’s final.”
“Maximus!”
Without another word, Maximus turned and stormed out of the room, his chest heaving. Part of him wanted to lash out, to end her suffering himself, but he couldn’t do it. He wasn’t a murderer. He wouldn’t become like the men who had destroyed his family.
Alexia’s pleas rang in his ears as he left, his mind a whirlwind of anger, sadness, and exhaustion. She had been the great love of his life once, and now she was a shattered shell–a reminder of everything he had lost. Despite his fury, he would pay her medical bills. It was all he could bring himself to do for the woman who had betrayed him.
