Serenity arrived at Maximus’s house feeling nervous. The bodyguard Maximus had assigned to her escorted her to the door, but her legs felt like jelly, and her hands wouldn’t stop trembling. Just the thought of running into Leonardo made her uneasy. She wanted to call Alden–she needed to talk to someone–but then she remembered he’d told her he was leaving the country. 

“Serene, sweetheart, what’s wrong? I saw them bring you home. Did something bad happen?” Emma asked, her face etched with concent 

Emma, I had to leave the office practically in hiding. Leonardo, Maximus’s father, showed up, and Matthew hid me in his office. That man… he kidnapped me once, along with Maximus’s son.” 

“Sweetheart… but he didn’t do anything to you this time, did he?” 

“No, Emma, but believe me, I’m terrified…” 

“Calm down, sweetheart. That man can’t hurt you now. You’re home. Do you want me to call your father?” 

“Maximus?” 

“No, should I call Marcus?” 

“No, Emma, no. He’d worry and end up blaming Maximus…” 

“All right, sweetheart. I’ll make you some tea to calm you down. Come with me to the kitchen. I’m not leaving you alone.” 

As they headed to the kitchen, Laura walked out and immediately noticed how pale Serenity looked. 

“Serenity, what’s wrong? Are you okay? You’re so pale.” 

“Don’t worry, sweetie. I’m fine. I just got a little scared. How are you?” 

“I’m good! Just came to grab something to eat. This baby keeps growing, and now at three months, it’s demanding even more food.” 

Serenity forced a smile, trying to hide her fear. The last thing she wanted was to worry Laura. Besides, Laura saw Leonardo as her grandfather, and she didn’t know the truth about their complicated relationship. 

A couple of hours later, Maximus’s plane landed. Matthew was already waiting for him at the terminal. 

“Matthew, what did my father say?” 

“He wants to see you.” 

“That bastard… What could he possibly want?” 

“I don’t know, Maximus. But I’m sure of one thing–he doesn’t have good intentions. He asked about Serenity.” 

“What does that scumbag want with my daughter?” 

“Thankfully, I’d already arranged for one of the security guys to escort her home.” 

“Good. Let’s head to Palmer Group. If Leonardo wants to talk, then let’s talk.”
