Chapter 0649
Frederick told her about how Marcus had fled to avoid certain death, knowing that if Frank Levett discovered he was still alive, he would hunt him down. He recounted how Marcus had narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in New York, where someone who resembled him had been decapitated as a warning.
“That damned man, how many families does he intend to hurt?‘ she thought, her face soaked in tears. Despite everything. Valerie was strong–stronger than even she or Frederick expected–and she wanted to keep listening to the hidden story about Marcus. Valerie paid close attention to every detail, and now she knew the truth: both Marcus and Peter were killers. She had been entangled with murderers.
“How can someone so kind, so good to others, be a killer?” Valerie asked aloud.
“Val… my daughter… Marcus had no choice,” Frederick begin. “Before the death of Valentina, his son, and the entire Bartz family, Marcus was a good man, a wonderful husband–just like you know him. If none of that had happened, Marcus would never have turned to this path.”
“Why didn’t Marcus tell me anything?” Valerie demanded.
“Val, you don’t go around telling people you’re a murderer. After he met you, he stopped. He didn’t want to continue on that road. Marcus always thought about you and Serenity. He didn’t want you to ever face this reality. In fact, he tried to distance himself from it all. That’s why, in the end, he sent Frank to live in a care facility to be looked after until his final days.”
“What?”
“He couldn’t bring himself to kill the man responsible for his family’s death. Instead, he paid for a nursing home to take care of Levett. Marcus found him in a pitiful state, nursed him back to health, and left him in that facility. The idea was that Frank would live out his last days there. I don’t know what went wrong with that plan.”
“Frederick… You’re speaking about all of this like it’s no big deal. Do you realize I just found out I’m married to a murderer? How can you be so calm?”
“Val… Lying to you would be worse. This is the plain, unvarnished truth. I won’t keep deceiving you. Marcus specifically told me to tell you everything if something like this ever happened.”
“What else did Marcus tell you? Tell me! Tell me! How many people has my husband killed? What terrible things has he done?”
“Val… you don’t need to know that,” Frederick said softly. “What matters is why he did it, and you already know that. You don’t need the gory details. Marcus and Peter did what they thought they had to do. It was all driven by their pain and anger at the time. But when you came into Marcus’s life, everything changed.”
“That’s no comfort, Frederick… Don’t you see me? I’m over six months pregnant, my husband is in jail for attempted murder, and you want to tell me he thought about this? Did Marcus ever consider what might happen. to us?”
“Valerie! Of course, he did!” Frederick said firmly. “Marcus thought about it every single day. It haunts him, constantly. Don’t you remember how he used to wake up in the middle of the night? It wasn’t just because of Peter; it was because of himself and the weight of his guilt
