Alden had directed the vehicle to a safe house he owned, choosing not to tell Serenity about it to avoid alarming her further. As they arrived, Serenity had fallen asleep in his arms. Carefully, he carried her out of the vehicle, her fragile form clinging to him unconsciously. 

Inside, Maximus and Frederick were already waiting, relieved that the children had arrived safely. But Maximus’s heart was heavy, his nerves frayed from not seeing Serenity among them. His breath caught when he saw Alden enter, carrying his sleeping daughter. 

“Alden, son, how is my daughter?” Maximus asked, his volte tense. 

“She’s fine, Uncle. She cried the entire way here, but she’s safe now. I’m going to take her to a room to rest. I’ve already arranged for clothes to be brought over–she’s… not in a state to be seen,” Alden said carefully. 

Maximus froze, his mind spiraling into dark thoughts. If Serenity wasn’t dressed, it could mean… Leonardo might have violated her. Alden, sensing the direction of his uncle’s thoughts, quickly reassured him. 

“No, Uncle. Nothing happened. We got to her in time. But the bastard escaped, and your family isn’t safe at home. We need to stay vigilant. 

Maximus exhaled deeply but still trembled with anger. “And Serenity’s mother? Is she here?” 

“No,” Frederick interjected. “She had a nervous breakdown and was taken to the hospital. Camille is with her, ensuring she’s protected. We’ve stationed security on the hospital floor as well.” 

“Good,” Alden replied. “My father should already be in Paroli, or on his way. For now, this is the safest place. I suggest bringing Laura and Paul here too. And I’d appreciate it if we kept my father’s presence a secret- Leonardo doesn’t know he’s involved, and it’s best if it stays that way. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll take Serenity upstairs.” 

Maximus watched Alden’s every move, noting his nephew’s gentle care for Serenity. He couldn’t shake the suspicion that Alden harbored deeper feelings for her, despite Alden’s insistence otherwise. The way Alden looked at her now only strengthened Maximus’s belief. 

“Alden, let me carry her,” Maximus said suddenly, his voice tight with unease. 

Alden turned to him, offering a small, understanding smile “Of course, Uncle. Just be careful not to jostle her too much. She’s been through enough, and I don’t want her walking up in a panic.” 

“Maximus,” Frederick interjected calmly, “I think it’s better if Alden takes her. She’s already comfortable with him, and the last thing we need is her having another episode.” 

Maximus hesitated but finally nodded. “You’re right. I need to stay calm. Alden, you said you’ve arranged clothes for her?” 

“Yes, Uncle. I made the call as soon as she fell asleep. If you ll excuse me… 

Alden carried Serenity upstairs, cradling her delicately. As he ascended, he couldn’t help but admire her delicate features, even in her vulnerable state. Serenity was undeniably beautiful, but Alden knew there could never be anything between them. The tangled web of their family’s history made such a relationship impossible, no matter what his heart might say. 

Moments later, the front door opened. Theodore entered, holding Ethan’s hand, with Peter close behind. The sight of Peter reignited Maximus’s simmering rage. He leapt from the couch and stormed toward his brother, his voice low and sharp as he hissed into Peter’s ear:

“You and I need to talk.” 

Peter stiffened, recognizing the barely restrained fury in Maximus’s tone. If Ethan hadn’t been there, he was sure. his brother’s fists would already be flying. 

“Ethan, my boy,” Peter said gently, crouching to the child’s level. “Why don’t you go play in your room for a while? These gentlemen and I need to have a little chat.” 

“Will you tell me a story later, Grandpa?”
