Maximus’s voice broke as he remembered Leonardo’s chilling smirk when he spoke of Serenity. 

Peter felt a cold shiver crawl down his spine. Memories of Alexia flooded his mind. She had confided in him during a week he had spent caring for her. She had told him how Leonardo had abused her repeatedly–even after Lucius. was conceived and born. Leonardo had threatened to harm Lucius as a child if Alexia resisted. At the time, Peter had dismissed her story with a bitter, “Everyone gets their own hell eventually.” 

But now, Peter knew it was all true. Leonardo was capable of the worst kind of evil. 

Alden carefully placed Serenity on the bed in his room, a space meticulously decorated in a minimalist style. This property, located in Redspire, was one Peter had insisted on acquiring for occasional use during their travels. 

As Serenity settled onto the bed, she instinctively stirred. The absence of Alden’s warmth woke her, and fear mixed with gratitude and confusion washed over her. She sat up suddenly as Alden turned to leave the room. 

“Don’t go! Don’t leave me… please…” she said, her voice trembling. 

Hearing her plea, Alden turned back, his gaze softening as he looked at her. Her piercing blue–gray eyes met his, and he offered her a gentle smile as he approached. 

“Sorry, did I wake you? That wasn’t my intention. How are you feeling?” 

For reasons she couldn’t explain, Serenity felt calmer in Alden’s presence. 

“No… I think I woke up because I couldn’t feel your warmth anymore. I… I’m a little cold,” she said, pulling the thin sheet tighter around herself. 

“Oh, right! Wait a second,” Alden said, walking over to a small table in the room. “I had some clothes brought for you. I hope they got the size right.” 

He retrieved the bag and handed it to her. As he moved to leave the room to give her privacy, she spoke again. 

“Could you… stay here with me? I don’t want to be alone.” 

Alden hesitated briefly before placing the bag on the bed and sitting down on its edge, close to her. 

“You don’t have to worry anymore,” he said, his voice reassuring. “This is a safe house. Nothing bad can happen to you here, and I’m staying with you. I promise this won’t happen again.” 

He reached out and gently brushed a strand of hair from her face, his hand lingering on her cheek. 

Serenity instinctively leaned into his touch, her delicate hard reaching up to hold his wrist. She looked directly into his eyes, the intensity of her gaze making Alden swallow hard. They were dangerously close. 

She was the first to close the gap, leaning forward to press her lips softly against his. Her inexperience was evident as her hands nervously clung to his neck. At first, Alden hesitated, unsure if he should respond. But within seconds, he cast aside his reservations and deepened the kiss, his lips meeting hers with passion. 

For Serenity, this kiss was unlike anything she had experienced before. The innocent pecks of her teenage years couldn’t compare to the overwhelming heat and intensity of this moment. As Alden’s hand slid to her bare back, pulling her closer, he felt her soft curves press against him. The sensation nearly made him lose control, but he forced himself to restrain his desires. Instead, he focused on savoring her warmth, exploring her mouth with a deliberate tenderness. 

Reality struck him as his thoughts cleared, and he reluctantly pulled back, his voice thick with emotion.

“Why?” she asked, her tone a mix of frustration and hurt as she looked at him intently. 

Alden smiled apologetically, his eyes drifting downward as the sheet covering her upper body slipped slightly. He averted his gaze, flustered.
