Maximus finally arrived at the hospital, walking towards Mary’s room. Almost at the door, he ran into Camille, who, upon seeing him, tried to wipe away the tears rolling down her cheeks. She wanted to pretend like nothing was happening, but to Maximus, it was clear something was wrong. 

“What’s going on, Camille? Has something happened? Are Mary and the babies okay?” 

“Yes, Maximus, they’re all fine, all things considered…” 

“So then? What’s wrong?” 

“Valerie doesn’t want to meet the babies, she rejects them. In her mind, all she can think about is that they are Marcus’s children, and that Marcus is a murderer.” 

“Camille, that’s a misunderstanding, Frederick is working to get him out of there. But, you know, the media pressure has made it impossible to file for an injunction.” 

“I understand, but she doesn’t. She doesn’t want to see the little ones, she wouldn’t even breastfeed them. It broke my heart! Dr. Hill says Valerie is going through postpartum depression. She’s been through a lot during her pregnancy and…” 

“And what?” 

“Along with the nervous breakdown and her history, everything has just gotten worse…” 

“Frederick told me that Dr. Hill has agreed to treat Mary…” 

“Yes! She’s coming to the hospital tomorrow to make a diagnosis. From there, it will depend on whether she is admitted immediately or if we can wait for her quarantine to finish.” 

“Do you think I can go in and see her?” 

“Only if she lets you. I’ve tried to go in, but she thinks I’m bringing the babies again, and she won’t let me.” 

“Don’t worry! She’ll get through this. It’s just a tough moment. She’s strong, and you know that!” 

“Thank you, Maximus! I really appreciate that you care about her. Can you tell me where my kids are? Serenity and John–if they come to see her, I’m sure it’ll cheer her up to see them…” 

“Camille, I can’t tell you where they are, but one thing is for sure: If Valerie rejects her babies, what makes you think she’ll accept John? Right now, it’s not a good time for them to visit. We need to avoid causing her more distress. With the treatment she’ll receive, I’m sure she’ll be herself again soon…” 

“I hadn’t thought of that, John is very much like Marcus… 

“Right now, the babies can’t experience their mother’s rejection, but John can. So it’s better not to create more conflicts and traumas, don’t you think?” 

“You’re right, Maximus… I hadn’t seen it from that angle. 

“Now, Camille, I’m going to try and see Mary. I hope she lets me in. I’ll only stay for a moment, but I don’t want to leave without seeing her. 

“Of course, go ahead!” 

Maximus knocked on the door, but when he didn’t get a response, he opened it and stepped in. Upon entering, he found Mary, lost in the view from the window in her room, Valerie, upon seeing him, turned and smiled.
