Serenity sighed, placing a hand on her belly. “Paul, the baby is already here,” she said firmly. “It’s not going to disappear like magic. This baby is coming into the world, whether people like it or not. Everyone here has suffered because of our parents‘ mistakes.
“But at some point, we have to start living our own lives. Good or bad, they’ve already lived theirs. Just because their lives are a mess doesn’t mean ours have to be. One day, you’ll grow up, take control of your own life, and make your own decisions–whether our parents like it or not. You’ll see.”
“I don’t want to go back to Valentia!” Paul exclaimed.
“I know you’re in love,” Serenity replied patiently. “But eventually, if we do go back, we can’t just leave you here. You’re still young, and you have so much life ahead of you. Your girlfriend can wait, and so can you. Only time will tell if what you two have is strong enough. But please, don’t use my pregnancy as an excuse for us to stay.”
Paul had imagined them staying here forever. To him, Alden and Serenity’s announcement only made it easier to believe they could stay. In his mind, they were already a family, and staying meant he wouldn’t have to part from the girl he loved.
Alden followed the two boys. When he finally caught up, he placed a hand on Ethan’s shoulder and said, “Ethàn, son, can we talk?”
“No!”
The boy’s face was streaked with tears, and he couldn’t process the idea of his father starting a new life without
his mother.
“Ethan, we have to talk, and you know we will–sooner or later,” Alden said, his voice taking on a firmer tone.
Over time, Alden had learned that when Ethan threw a tantrum, this tone worked best. Peter, on the other hand, had always spoken to Ethan in the same monotone voice, whether he was scolding him or rewarding him. It had made Ethan especially sensitive to changes in Alden’s tone, and Alden used this to his advantage when things got tough.
Hearing Alden’s tone, John chimed in defensively, “Don’t yell at Ethan! He’s not bad!”
“John,” Alden said gently, “can you leave me alone with Ethan for a moment? We need to have a long talk.”
John hesitated. “Are you going to be the dad of my sister’s baby?”
“Yes,” Alden admitted. “And that’s exactly what I need to talk about with Ethan. Can you give us some time?”
“You won’t punish him?” John asked suspiciously.
“No, John, I’m not going to punish him. I promise I won’t say anything bad. Please, just give us a moment.”
John looked at his friend, then back at Alden. What could a six–year–old do to intervene, anyway? With no other choice, John turned and headed back to the house.
“Ethan… Come on, let’s sit down for a minute,” Alden said softly.
“I don’t want to!” Ethan yelled. “You promised me! And you broke it! Why do you have another woman who isn’t my mom?”
“Ethan,” Alden said, crouching to meet his eyes, “let’s talk man to man, okay? I’m not talking to a little kid, right?

Peter had always used that phrase with Ethan when he was upset. Alden knew he had to adopt the same approach; otherwise, Ethan might dig in even harder.
“What do you want?”
“Ethan… I will always love your mother because she brought you into this world, and you’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me, but I need to be honest with you…‘
“What?”
“Your mom and I can’t be together anymore. She has her life in Spain, and I have mine here… with you.”
“Then just stay here with me.”
“What’s going to happen when you grow up and are my age? Are you still going to stay by my side like you’re asking now?”
