Chapter 0762
Maximus took Mary to Magnus’s house. When they arrived Diana wasn’t there–she had gone to work. Without wasting time, he tried to contact Marcus, but after several attempts, he realized the man wasn’t going to answer. So he decided to call Frederick instead.
“Frederick, I’ve been trying to reach Marcus, but I’m not having any luck. Do you know how I can get in touch with him?”
“Maximus, to be honest, I’ve been working with Moriarty’s team these past few days, so I haven’t had a chance to talk to him. What’s going on?”
“I have Ma… Valerie with me. Apparently, Marcus dropped her off at the hospital and won’t talk to her.”
“Maximus, I don’t know what to tell you. I can try to find him, but I don’t think I’m the right person to give you Marcus’s whereabouts.”
“Just tell him he needs to talk to Valerie. She’s really worried about her kids. You’ve seen her–she hasn’t been well these past few months, and I don’t want her to relapse. What kind of husband abandons his wife at such a vulnerable moment? I agreed to help her when Marcus was in prison, but now… how the hell can he just leave her like this?”
“Obviously, I’m not going to tell him all that, but let me try to find him.”
Frederick was talking to Maximus while watching Marcus board a private jet with his kids and Camille. He knew his friend and colleague wasn’t making the right choice, but now wasn’t the time to go against him. Frederick understood Marcus well enough to know that if he pushed too hard, Marcus could snap and act recklessly.
A few hours later, Maximus was having a drink with Magnus, discussing the upcoming plan for the next few weeks, when Valerie showed up, wanting to talk to him.
“Maximus, have you been able to reach Marcus? I’ve been feeling strange for hours, like something’s off. I’m worried about my kids–I can’t relax. Maybe I should go to the house in Westhaven. I might find some clues about where he could have gone.”
“Valerie, even if you go to Westhaven, you won’t find them…”
“What do you mean, Maximus?”
“When we had to admit you to the hospital after Marcus got out of prison, he decided to move everything to Florentia to be closer to you. Didn’t he tell you that?”
“Yes, but there might still be something at the house that can tell me where they are…”
“Mary… I know I’m the last person who should be telling you this, but you need to give him time. From what you told me, trust me–knowing your husband, I can tell you he won’t process this easily. Maybe with time, he’ll think things through, and you two will be able to talk. But if you do it now, you’ll only end up hurting each other. He’ll just get angrier, and you won’t be able to fix anything.”
“Maximus, are you telling me to just let him leave?”
“I’m telling you to give him time. I’m a man, Mary–I know he needs time to cool down. He’s the father of your children, and as long as John is with Alden, Marcus will always have a reason to contact me. That will give me a chance to find him, because, to be completely honest, I haven’t been able to track him down yet.”
Mary couldn’t hold it in any longer and started crying. She felt desperate and lost, unsure of who else could help her. She couldn’t reach Camille, and as for Marcus… she had nothing.
