“What you need to do now is figure out what you want for your future. To be honest, I’m surprised by Marcus’s reaction. Of course, he’s angry, but you’re his wife! You were admitted to a psychiatric hospital, for God’s sake! Did he not see that?
“You really need to think about whether this is the man you want for yourself, the man you want to spend the rest of your life with. Do you want to be with someone who abandons you at your most vulnerable? Think about it, because from what I’ve seen, you’ve needed him, and he hasn’t been there for you…”
Valerie stared at him, unsure of what to say. One thing was clear–if she was being honest with herself, there was truth in Maximus’s words. Since they had arrived in Valentia and the problems had started, Marcus had left her alone more than once. His reactions were unpredictable.
Back in Hesperia, Marcus had been a completely different man from the one she was now facing. The loving, warm, and level–headed man she had known was slipping away in Valentia.
“Maximus, I know you don’t understand why I love Marcus and I’m not going to explain it to you. Just like I know that, despite everything Alexia did, you never did anything about it. I can’t just pretend nothing happened either. I love my husband, despite everything. I know that now–I realized it once my mind finally cleared.

“What happened between Peter and me was the biggest mistake I’ve ever made. I don’t blame him–I’blame myself. Like always, I never think about the consequences, and I end up in messes like this. It was something worked on in therapy, but I still have a long way to go.
“It hurts that I hurt Marcus. It hurts to be away from my babies. It hurts to be far from John and Serenity. We lived peacefully for years, and that stability shattered the moment we got here. It’s like this country is telling us over and over again that we don’t belong. If it were up to me, I’d take my kids and go back to Hesperia. This place js nothing but schemes, revenge, and pain.”
For the first time, Valerie was speaking openly with Maximus. She felt frustrated–a mother who hadn’t been able to see her children as much as she wanted, a mother who hadn’t seen John or Serenity in months. She felt like she was young again, dependent on everyone just to survive. Right now, she had no money to move, only her passport and ID. Everything she had was back in Hesperia.
