The moment Marcus saw the news of Frank Levett’s arrest he knew it was time to return. Anthony Moriarty had told him to be patient, to take his people and leave Valentia until things were ready.
Now, the moment had arrived. He didn’t need permission, didn’t need a phone call–he just needed to go back. His heart and mind were tangled in a storm of emotions.
As soon as Marcus Bartz stepped off the plane, Maximus was informed. The man had returned–but he was alone. There was no sign of his children, and that worried him.
Mary had remained calm for the most part, but every now and then, reality would overwhelm her, and she’d break down in tears. One way or another, Maximus had to fix things between her and Marcus. Otherwise, she would continue living in denial about what was happening.
At the same time, Peter had also landed in Valentia, which Matthew did not approve of. Matthew had begged him to go back to Slovenia, but Peter refused–he had come for Celeste.
He couldn’t just pretend nothing had happened. She was pregnant, carrying his children. He could not go on acting as if she didn’t exist.
Something he had never been willing to do before, he was ready to do now–anything, as long as it meant she would listen to him. But he had no idea how much damage he had caused her, how deep the wounds ran.
Right now, the only thing that mattered to him was finding Celeste.
He didn’t care about the consequences or what would happen to him. Nothing he could suffer would compare to what she must have been going through.
The thought that she was three months pregnant and he hadn’t been there made him want to lose his mind.
Back in Eterna, Marcus wasted no time trying to locate Valerie.
He knew he needed to talk to her first, before anything else.
He recognized how terribly he had handled things–separating her from their children was the cruelest thing he could have done. Leaving her in that psychiatric hospital was unforgivable.
He knew Valerie would probably never forgive him, but he still wanted to believe that somehow, they could fix things.
Through Frederick, Marcus learned that Valerie had been expelled from the hospital. After the scene he had caused when he barged in with his men, she had been forced to leave. She had been left completely alone–and the only person who had helped her, the one person who had been there for her, was Maximus Palmer.
After hours of driving, Marcus arrived at his house in Westhaven.
Walking through the halls, seeing the furniture they had picked out together, made his chest tighten with pain.
They had come to Valentia to avenge Peter’s death. In the end, Peter hadn’t died. Everything had spiraled out of control. He had lost himself, consumed by jealousy over Valerie’s past.
Hearing about it was one thing. Seeing it, living it, was another.
He was lost in thought, trapped in his memories, when his phone rang.
He hesitated before answering.

Marcus
Yeah, What do you want, Maximus?”
“We need to talk.”
“I’m not in the mood to talk to you.” Marcus was about to hang up.
“It’s about Valerie.”
Marcus froze.
He wanted to end the call, but at the mention of her name, he stopped himself.
“…What do you want to say?”
“Open the door. I’m outside your house in Westhaven.”
Marcus exhaled sharply. He had no staff anymore–he had let everyone go, thinking they would return to Hesperia once Valerie finished her treatment.
Reluctantly, he walked to the door and opened it.
“Talk.”
“Can we at least sit down?”
“Just come in and say what you need to say.”
Maximus stepped inside.
“Valerie is staying at my father’s house. After what happened, I thought it was best for her to stay with us. Look, I don’t agree with the way you handled things, but I know what happened. And I can tell you this–Valerie was a victim of Peter.”
Marcus let out a cold laugh.
“So now you’re here to defend your little brother?”
“Marcus, Peter is going to hate me for this, but you need to know the truth.”
Maximus took a deep breath.
