When she returned to the table, Maximus looked colder than before. But Catherine greeted her with at warm, excited smile. 

“Mary, I wasn’t able to celebrate your birthday, and it saddened me. So, I have a special gift for you,” Catherine said, pulling out a small black box. “Peter tool me you used to drive his car when you lived in Gaeta. He helped me pick this out for you.” 

Mary opened the box and found keys to a Maserati. 

“Grandma! No, this isn’t necessary. I hardly ever leave the mansion.” 

“Nonsense, my dear! It’s your birthday gift. I know Maximus hasn’t even thought of getting you something like this. How else can you move around freely without a car?” 

“She doesn’t need a car, Grandma. She doesn’t know how to drive. That’s what the chauffeur is for,” Maximus said dismissively. 

This comment stung Mary. Out of spite, she accepted the generous gift. 

That’s a lie, Maximus! I do know how to drive. Peter taught me and let me borrow his cars all the time. In fact, I even have a valid driver’s license here,” she retorted. 

Maximus clenched his fists but stayed silent. It was clear there were many things he didn’t know about his wife. 

“Well, well, let’s not argue again. Now, for your anniversary, I have another gift for both of you,” Catherine announced. “I know you had to cancel your honeymoon because of issues at the company. So, I’ve arranged for you to take it now.” 

She handed them tickets for a week in Santorini, departing in two days. Both were visibly stunned, caught completely off guard. 

“Grandma, that’s not necessary. Maximus is always busy, and I don’t mind skipping the honeymoon, Mary said, trying to dismiss the idea. 

Maximus raised an eyebrow, surprised at her clear lack of interest in spending time with him. The thought unsettled him–had she truly stopped caring? 

“Maximus, a week away from the office shouldn’t be a problem. Matthew can handle things. If not, I can bring your father back to take over. Problem solved,” Catherine said pointedly. 

Maximus understood her subtext perfectly: this was his chance to redeem himself in her eyes. 

“Grandma, I’m fine without a honeymoon. It’s been so long that I’d forgotten we never had one until now,” Mary said firmly. 

“Grandma, we’ll gladly accept your gift. I just need to rearrange my schedule,” Maximus finally 

declared. 

This response shocked Mary, who had hoped to avoid being near him. A week in Santorini sounded more like a punishment than a gift.

Outside the restaurant, Catherine unveiled the car. Mary’s eyes sparkled with joy as she admired it, making Maximus’s blood boil. Peter knew her better than he did something that filled him with simmering jealousy. 

After Catherine left, Maximus turned to Mary. “We need to talk.” 

“About what?” 

“The gift. Do you think it’s unnecessary?” 

“Oh, it’s obvious–you’ll go to Santorini with Alexia, and I’ll stay in the mansion.” 

Maximus was taken aback by her bluntness. But before he could clarify, Mary climbed into the car and started the engine. 

“Hey! What are you doing? Get out! You’re not going where I’m going!” 

“How do you know that? And by the way, I was talking about the car.” 

“What about it?”

“You’re crazy! You can’t decide what I keep or return. You don’t even live at the house anymore, this car is more practical than your chauffeur.”
