Maximus sat on a bench, reflecting on the direction of his life. After an hour, he returned to his car and drove to Alexia’s apartment. He had made a decision. Sometimes love hurts,‘ he thought. 

“Can I stay here?” he asked when she opened the door 

“Of course, love! This is your home. What happened? 

Nothing. Mary just has a way of driving me insane. I didn’t want to overreact, so I left. I’m hoping I can stay here for a while.” 

“This is your home,” Alexia repeated. “Stay as long as you like.‘ 

Maximus had finally decided–if Mary wanted him out of the mansion, he would leave. He would move out without his grandmother ever finding out. For once, Mary had said something he could agree with since their marriage began. 

Their wedding anniversary eventually arrived, and with it came a summons from his grandmother, Catherine. As usual, Maximus notified Mary, and she prepared to receive the matriarch. Emma kept quiet about the couple’s arrangements since both had explicitly ordered her to respect their privacy. Maximus had warned her that if anything leaked to his grandmother, her children would face 

consequences. 

At an exclusive and luxurious restaurant, Mary and Maximus waited for Catherine. During the wait, they didn’t exchange a word. Maximus avoided looking at or speaking to Mary, instead focusing on his tabler and sipping his coffee. 

When Catherine arrived, she was immediately suspicious of the cold dynamic between them. The couple didn’t seem like the happy pair they portrayed during video calls or visits. 

“Maximus, Mary! My children, put away your devices. Are you talking to each other through those? I expected something different.” 

“Sorry, Grandma,” Mary murmured, lowering her head. 

“Grandma, I was just checking emails while we waited” Maximus explained coldly. 

“Hmm, sometimes I think your marriage is a farce. It’s been a year, and there’s no sign of a baby yet. Remember, I’m not getting any younger, and I want to meet my great–grandchildren.” 

“Grandma, you’re still young. There’s no rush to bring babies into the world. We’re enjoying our new life together,” Maximus replied with his usual detached expression. 

Mary shot him a sharp look, her gaze filled with disdain at his audacity. 

“Yes, Grandma! You don’t need to wor 

sarcastic tone, her face unreadable. 

After all, one of us might be infertile,” Mary said with a 

“What? No, child, don’t say such things! That’s not something to joke about.” 

“Mary, don’t make careless comments like that!” Maximus snapped, his voice full of irritation.

“Well, I’m just stating the obvious. I’m not taking precautions, and I haven’t gotten pregnant. Maybe I’m infertile,” Mary sald dryly, her tone mocking despite her serious expression. 

“Enough! There’s no need to argue, my children. My great–grandchildren will come in time. Now let’s 

“Grandma, excuse me. I need to use the restroom,” Mary said abruptly, standing up and walking away. 

The moment Mary was out of sight, Catherine’s warm demeanor shifted to something much harsher. 

“Now tell me, Maximus, what the hell are you doing living with that harlot? I thought when you got married, she’d disappear from your life.” 

“Grandma, what are you talking about?” 

“Oh, don’t play dumb with me, Maximus! I’m not naive. I have eyes and ears everywhere. I even know you haven’t removed her from the company. I’m incredibly disappointed in you. Soon, I’ll convene a meeting with the board to remove you. I don’t have a successor yet, but as soon as I find one,” them in your place–since Peter refuses to return.”
