Maximus spent the entire day at the mansion, staying by Mary’s side and helping her with her medication. Meanwhile, Peter, unable to stomach Maximus’s decision, left in a fit of anger. 

By evening, Catherine seized the opportunity to foster intimacy between the couple. She had dinner served early and retired to her room, leaving them alone. 

When Mary sat down for dinner, she was surprised to see only two place settings. 

“Leopold, where’s Grandma 

“Mrs. Catherine is resting. She was feeling a bit tired and preferred to retire early,” the butler explained.

“It appears you’ll only be dining with Mr. Maximus tonight.”

Mary felt a twinge of discomfort in her stomach. Though she’d remained calm around Maximus during the day, his presence still unsettled her. She made an effort to maintain her composure despite his kindness, but she had seen this pattern before. ‘Grandma must have threatened to take the company from him again,‘ she thought. 

It wasn’t the first time Maximus had acted kind and caring under Catherine’s pressure. Mary had experienced his charm before, only to end up heartbroken when he reverted to his true self.

Mary arrived at the airport terminal with a small suitcase. She had packed light, planning only to rest and explore the area. In contrast, Maximus arrived with Alexia clinging to him, kissing and caressing him with poorly concealed jealousy. 

“Maximus, please! Don’t be kind to her. I know you have to go, but don’t treat her well. You know she’s the reason we’re in this awful situation. She separated us, and she’s still doing it,” Alexia hissed. 

“Alexia, my love,” he replied with a sigh, “I’m only going because Grandma is forcing me. There’s no way I’m spending a moment longer than necessary with that child.” 

“I love you, darling! I’ll miss you so much. Dream of me,” Alexia whispered before pulling him into a passionate kiss. 

Maximus pulled his suitcase behind him, his mood soured, only to run into Leopold. 

“Mr. Maximus, your grandmother asked me to give you this before you leave for your honeymoon,” Leopold said, extending an envelope. 

“What is this?” 

“She asked me to remind you of your recent conversation during your anniversary.”

Inside the envelope was a memorandum stating Catherine’s intent to remove him as president for moral misconduct and misuse of the Palmer name. It named her as the one to appoint a successor, requiring majority approval for any objections. Maximus felt a cold wave of dread–no one in their right mind would oppose Catherine.

I know you must hate me for forcing you to marry someone you don’t love, but you must understand 1 am not an unjust woman. I have given you countless opportunities to correct your mistakes, yet you refuse to see reason.

Maximus was so furious after reading the letter that he didn’t notice how late he was for the flight. He used his last name to delay the departure, while Mary was already on board. 

Emma had gifted her headphones and a music player, so she closed her eyes and let the music carry her away. Seeing the empty seat beside her, she smiled to herself. 

“Mary, what were you expecting from this? You’ll travel alone, and that’s fine. You’ll enjoy a trip you’d never have imagined in your lifetime,” she whispered. 

She pulled the blanket from her first–class seat over herself and prepared to sleep for the next few hours. 

A sudden jolt of turbulence startled her awake.

“I thought you’d sleep until we landed,” he said with a smirk. 

“What are you doing here?” she asked, releasing his hand, which had steadied her.
