Chapter 0087
In Valeria, several miles away from Florentia, events were unfolding that would change everything.
Alexia had officially signed her termination papers but remained calm, confident that Maximus would visit her soon. She was certain he’d have a good explanation for everything that had happened.
Days passed, but he still hadn’t shown up: A strange feeling gnawed at her chest–this wasn’t like her beloved. Something felt off.
One ordinary morning, Alexia woke up with a slight bout of dizziness. Feeling the urge to vomit, she rushed to the bathroom. This wasn’t the first time it had happened in recent days, and it caught her
attention.
She grabbed her phone and opened a period–tracking app. Two weeks late.
“Damn it! Damn it! This can’t be happening now! No, no!” she muttered, throwing on a coat and bolting out of her apartment.
She drove like a bat out of hell until she found a pharmacy, rushed inside, and purchased five pregnancy tests before hurrying home.
Once back in her apartment, Alexia went straight to the bathroom to take the first test. She waited the allotted time, and when she saw the result, her hand flew to her mouth.
“Damn it, Alexia! What the hell? How could you be so stupid and careless?”
The test was positive. Her knees buckled, and she sank to the bathroom floor. Hoping it was a mistake, she took two more tests, but they all showed the same result. She tried the last two–same outcome. One test even displayed an estimate of how far along she was: six weeks.
“What am I going to do? What? Think, Alexia, think!” she said aloud, pacing back and forth.
After cursing herself and her bad luck for several minutes, she managed to calm down. This couldn’t be as disastrous as it seemed. A child was a powerful reason for Maximus to expedite the divorce and finally recognize her as his wife.
With a clearer head, Alexia snapped a photo of one of the tests and composed a message: [We need to talk.] She hesitated, thumb hovering over the send button, but ultimately hit send.
Not expecting Maximus to delay his response, she tried calling him several times, but his phone was off.
The entire day, Alexia rehearsed how she’d break the news to him. He wouldn’t be upset–why would he be? They loved each other, and the only thing standing in their way was his marriage, which was already falling apart.
With a baby growing inside her, there would be no reason for Maximus’s family to deny their relationship any longer. In fact, Alexia knew Catherine desperately wanted a grandchild from Maximus.
