My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 899

Peter had just left the bedroom, making his way toward the living room when, at the top of the stairs, he ran into a familiar figure. Katherine was coming up, and Peter knew her well enough to recognize that she wasn’t exactly someone to be trusted—neither in the past nor now. She was someone to be wary of. In a way, he could understand the concern or gut feeling Celeste, his future wife, had about her.

"Katherine, where exactly do you think you’re going?" Peter asked sharply.

"Sorry, I think I got lost. I was looking for the restroom…" Katherine said shamelessly.

"You and I both know that’s the last thing you were doing. What do you really want?" Peter asked, irritated.

"Alright, you caught me. I wanted to talk to you alone for a moment. And while I was at it, I figured I’d deliver a gift I brought for your fiancée," Katherine said calmly.

"I have no idea what you could possibly need to talk to me about, but if that was really your intention, you shouldn’t have come upstairs."

"Well, I didn’t want to start any false rumors if people saw us talking alone. Especially considering Celeste."

"For exactly that reason, I don’t think we should be having a private conversation away from everyone else."

"But I want to."

"You’re not going to let this go, are you?"

"Hmm? Nope."

"Fine, follow me… Let’s go to my study. But leave the door open. Whatever we need to talk about can be said with the door open, right?"

"As you wish. Are you afraid Celeste will misunderstand?"

"I won’t lie to you—yes. I do fear that… and more."

"Fair enough. Whatever you say."

Peter led the way to his study, and as promised, left the door open. He sat behind his desk while Katherine took a seat in one of the chairs across from him.
