My Love Until the Last Goodbye (Mary and Maximus) novel Chapter 900

"Because as far as I remember, you were madly in love with another woman. I won’t deny that the woman you chose is lovely—honestly, I was surprised. She’s beautiful. But, if we’re being completely honest… she’s not your type at all," she said with unmistakable certainty.

Peter let out a small smile. "Katherine… who exactly do you think is worthy of me? Let me guess… yourself? Are you talking about you? Because, if I remember correctly, I asked you countless times to leave your boring husband and run away with me… but you never did. So why should I listen to anything you have to say now?" he said, irritation creeping into his voice.

"You’re right! You shouldn’t listen to me… but that doesn’t mean I can’t give my opinion."

"You’re the mother of my son—one I didn’t know I had, one I still don’t fully understand how I ended up with. But today, he’s here with me, and from what I’ve been told, he has been for almost six years. That’s why you’re in my life. But you are not my concern."

"I never said I was."

"You didn’t have to. I’ve always known what you thought of me. I was never stupid—I knew you looked down on me. Your husband was a millionaire, and I was just Peter Palmer, the black sheep of the Palmer family. We had fun together, but that was all it was.

"I have to admit, finding out I had a child with you was a shock. Because, if I’m being honest, I always knew you would never accept me openly. We had our fun, but that was all it ever was. You and I were just together to satisfy a need.

"If I loved you or was in love with you—it never mattered to you, did it?"

Katherine couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Peter was speaking with the same coldness and certainty as he had over twenty years ago when it came to Angela or Mary.

"Maybe you’re wrong… but it’s been years, Peter. Is there really a point in reopening old wounds?"
