Chapter 0204
Upon hearing Alex’s phone ring. Sieg offered a quick goodbye and walked away, leaving Alex to his call.
Now alone, Alex answered the phone.
There was a brief silence before Candice’s voice came through. “Where are you?”
Alex scoffed, “What does it matter to you?”
Candice was still at the hospital. She had just met with Joe to go over his surgery, which he had consented to. Once everything was set, she had stepped outside to make the call.
She didn’t believe in coincidences and also had had a realization.
Dr. Sui wasn’t employed at Silverstone Hospital. It didn’t make sense for them to request her grandfather for the surgery program. After all, Silverstone Hospital was a recognized Dorrington hospital that could provide its own surgeons.
Candice suspected Alex’s involvement, especially since she had spoken to him earlier that day. and the surgery had already been confirmed by the evening.
“I need to discuss my grandfather’s surgery with you.”
“What’s there to talk about?” Alex asked, his gaze narrowing.
“I told you I’d agree to anything if you helped me,” Candice said, her voice low and resigned.
Alex’s reply was emotionless. “Okay.”
Candice arrived promptly. Within thirty minutes, her car stopped in front of Alex.
Alex looked at her and demanded, “Drive me home.”
After drinking wine with Seig it wasn’t safe for him to drive.
Candice complied. She parked her car, got out, and took Alex’s keys to drive him in his own car.
She knew he disliked her smaller vehicle.
The drive was quiet. Once they arrived, Candice returned the keys.
Alex took them. He gazed at her enigmatically and casually remarked, “I haven’t eaten.”
Candice took a breath. “What would you like to eat?”

He didn’t reply but turned toward the elevator.
Candice paused for a bit before heading to a local restaurant to get Alex a bowl of grits.
In the past she would buy it for him whenever he got home drunk from social occasions. It had
become a habit that was soon forgotten.
The restaurant owner recognized her.
“I haven’t seen you in a while,” he asked, smiling. “The usual?”
Candice nodded and went back to the apartment with the takeout.
Once she arrived, she remembered that the elevators required an access card. She hadn’t returned her card to Alex when she moved out, and she wasn’t sure if it worked.
She swiped the card at the scanner.
The elevator began to move. The floor numbers flashed, and the doors opened on Alex’s floor.
She turned the corner and noticed the door to her old apartment was ajar. Candice remembered the movers saying something about a new tenant moving in.
Suddenly, the door swung open wider. Alex remained there, expressionless and staring at her. Lost your way after moving out for a few days?”
She hastily hid her surprise and delivered the meal to him. “For you.”
Alex looked at her. His tone was a little patronizing as he mockingly questioned, “What are your waiting for? Do I have to invite you in?”
She remained quiet. Her lips tightly pressed.
The apartment looked much the same as when she had left. She took the food to the kitchen, dished it into a bowl, and set it on the table.
“It’s ready.”
Alex had been sitting on the sofa with his phone. He glanced up at her words and moved to the dining table.
Candice watched him before she broke the silence. “You arranged my grandfather’s surgery. didn’t you?”
Alex stopped eating, raising his eyebrows at her. With a hint of mockery, he asked, “Is that all you want to talk about?“”

Candice’s fingers twitched slightly, and she said, “I want to thank you.”
Alex set down his spoon, locked eyes with her. “Is a mere ‘thank you‘ really worth anything?” It was clear he felt her method of expressing her gratitude was lacking.
She blinked, unsure of how to respond. His mood was unpredictable, and his intentions were
unclear.
“Candice.” His indifferent gaze fell on her and was difficult to discern. Finally, he commented flatly. “Your word doesn’t hold much weight now. Come back when you can keep your promises. For now, you should leave.”
After that, he turned away and no longer looked at her.
His phone lay on the coffee table and rang. Candice silently picked it up and offered it to him.
She caught a glimpse of the screen and hesitated for a moment. The caller was from an unlisted Noxville number that was faintly familiar to her.
Nonetheless, she handed the phone to Alex without further thought.
Alex briefly looked at the screen and then casually placed it back down.
“Are you not going to answer it?” she asked.
“Spam call,” he dismissed.
