Chapter 0288
-180
Candice hadn’t spent much time with Shawn, but she knew that when Alex was a child in the
Elysian family, he always stayed by Shawn’s side.
Candice used to accompany Alex to spend time with Shawn, who would often say that she would be the Elysian family’s granddaughter–in–law in the future.
Unlike Daniel and Helen, Shawn genuinely liked her.
Candice remembered the first time she went to meet Shawn with Alex he had given her his blessings. In her presence, he also educated Alex, emphasizing the importance of treating his wife well
However, precisely because of this, she was somewhat reluctant to see him. She didn’t want to hear his regrets about their relationship. More importantly, she didn’t want to pretend in front of Alex as if everything was fine.
But before she could express her refusal, she heard Alex say, “If you don’t go to see him, he’ll probably come to find you.”
Indeed, that was something Shawn would do. Alex’s stubbornness was influenced to a great
extent by Shawn.
Between breaths, she struggled with conflicting emotions. Eventually, she nodded. “I’ll go see him.
He acknowledged with a casual “Hmm,” not paying much attention. “I’ll pick you up when it’s time.
Candice remained silent. While Alex could be stern and decisive when dealing with outsiders, he was quite accommodating with those close to him. Examples included Shawn and Jessica. For
someone like her, who wasn’t as intimate, he could be ruthless.
As her thoughts churned, she followed Alex into the construction area.
Ryan happened to be outside, and upon seeing them, raised an eyebrow. “Is Mr. Elysian here to
supervise again?”
His tone was unfriendly, and Alex gave him a glance before entering directly.
Following Alex, Candice heard Ryan’s indifferent voice, “Hanley is inside.”
The construction site was cluttered with debris. Candice had changed into flat shoes when she
came out, but due to the many cables strewn on the ground, she walked slowly.
“Come this way.” A deep voice sounded, and Candice, unsure where it came from, turned to find
Hanley pointing in a direction. He reminded her. “There’s dust over there, it’s easy to soll your
clothes.”
Hanley was dressed in work clothes with some paint stains on him. He didn’t approach Candice
but stood not far away. When Candice turned to look at him, a cold voice sounded before she could speak, “Should I compliment Mr. Baldwin for being so gentlemanly?”
Alex, in his white shirt, seemed out of place in this setting. His dark eyes were cool as he
observed Hanley and Candice.
Hanley lowered his long lashes, paused for a moment, and expressionlessly said, “After all, she is
mine now. It’s only natural for the boss to take care of her a bit more.”
“But Mr. Elysian definitely can’t be like me. After all, there are too many people in Mr. Elysian’s
company. There are dozens of secretaries alone, it is impossible to take care of everyone.”
Although his last sentence lacked a particular tone, the mockery was clear.
“Yours?” Alex’s eyes narrowed slightly. He sneered, “Mr. Baldwin just returned to the country, and
your choice of words is quite inappropriate.”
“Whether it’s appropriate or not, who are you to judge?” The tension between the two escalated, even causing a few workers nearby to stop their work.
Candice furrowed her brow. Standing next to Hanley, she stated matter–of–factly, “Mr. Elysian is
here for an inspection.”
Her attitude was not very friendly as she didn’t want to become a tool for the quarrel between
these two. She said seriously, “I’m not very knowledgeable about materials and construction. If Mr. Elysian wants to know, you can ask someone else. I’ll go outside to help.”
After saying this, she left and happened to run into Nadia, who was counting things. They went together to settle things.
Alex, after all, had come for work. Once he confirmed that there were no issues on the site, he left.
Following him to the parking lot, Candice asked, “Are you satisfied today?”
Alex’s hand, which was about to open the car door, paused. He looked at Candice with a deep
gaze. “In what aspect?”
Candice said, “The progress of the construction.”
Alex’s tone was casual. “There’s an improvement compared to last time.”
Suddenly, his gaze stopped at a spot on Candice’s left shoulder. His brow slowly furrowed.

Following his gaze, she found some white dust on her clothes, and she patted it off. Then, she turned back to Alex and said, “Since there’s nothing unsatisfactory, I’ll go back and help them. Have a safe journey, Mr. Elysian.”
The distance and rejection in her tone were almost explicit.
Alex stared at her expressionlessly. The evening sky wasn’t too dark, and the evening breeze softened his facial features.
His deep black eyes locked on her, and his voice remained cold. “Don’t forget what you promised
me.”
He was referring to meeting Shawn. Candice nodded, “I won’t.”
After several days of overtime at the Burning Star Studio site, Candice finally felt that everyonel could breathe a sigh of relief.
On the day Yana came over, the entire group unexpectedly got a day off.
However, she didn’t pay attention to the others but directly pulled Nadia and Candice aside.
saying, “I need a favor from you two.”
“What favor?”
“I’m going to attend a birthday banquet for a friend’s sister tonight. I don’t want to go alone. Can
