Chapter 0030
Candice breathed carefully while standing in front of Alex’s desk. She stared at the man for a while and then said slowly. “You promised me to take care of my grandfather.”
When Candice first brought Alex to meet her grandfather, he promised that as long as she continued to follow him and be an obedient girl, he would take good care of her grandfather.
Candice did a great job. She had always been good but Alex eventually lost his patience with her.
It was from many years ago, so long ago that even Alex had to think long and hard about this ever happening. He asked, “Have I said something like that before?”
Candice looked down. “If you don’t remember, then just pretend I didn’t say anything.”
“Go back to work. If I have the time, I’ll visit,” he said,
He did not provide an exact answer and Candice stopped asking.
However, after work, Candice waited for him at his office for an hour but he was nowhere to be found.
When she arrived at the hospital it was already dinner time.
Joe had dinner and was reading a book on his bed.
He put his book down when Candice came in. “Taken your dinner?”
Candice had not eaten but she nodded. “I came after I ate.”
Joe shook his head. He sounded stricter than usual as he said, “Candice, don’t you lie to me. You look temible. You haven’t eaten dinner,
have you?”
He then opened the drawer next to his bed and took two pieces of cake out for her. “The teacher from the school got me these in the
afternoon. Have some.”
“Oh, Alex Joe trailed when he gave Candice the cake.
Candice instinctively took the cake and said, “He’s busy. There’s been a big client recently and he’s working overtime.”
Joe was stunned. He then looked at Candice strictly and said, “Candice, tell me. Did you have a light with Alex?”
Candice said, “No.”
“If not, then why do you keep saying he’s busy when I mention him.” Joe did not believe her. He added softly, “Alex came by this afternoon. I was wondering why you were not with him.”
Candice was shocked. “Alex came?”
“He came for a while and then said he was busy.” Joe sighed. “Candice, don’t keep everything to yourself. Alex is a good kid, it’s just that he’s not much of a talker.”
Candice stayed until 9 p.m. before the nurse told her that visiting hours were over.
On the way back, she got some takeaway for dinner.
She was in deep thoughts while she was in the elevator. When she walked out, she took the other turn and headed to Alex’s place.
A moment of struggle later, she pressed the bell but no one answered.
She waited for a while and still no reply.
Alex was either not home or refused to open the door.
The takeaway she bought was getting cold.
Candice turned around and wanted to head home. It was then she bumped into Alex.
He was coming out of the elevator. He only had his white shirt on, his jacket was hanging over his arm.

Alex paused when he saw Candice. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m waiting for you.” Candice said straightforwardly.
Alex frowned. He did not want Candice to enter his house. “What is it? You can tell me here.”
Candice blinked. She slowly said, “I went to the hospital just now and my grandfather said you visited him in the afternoon.”
Alex nonchalantly said, “I was sending Sonia there anyway, so in passing, I figured I could drop by.”
Candice’s grievance disappeared immediately.
She and her grandfather were nothing but objects in passing to Alex.
He was right. Why would she think he would purposely drop by to visit her grandfather?
She even bought dinner and wanted to have a talk with him.
Candice snapped out of her delusion and nodded. A moment later, she added, “If you are busy, you don’t have to.”
She looked at the plant in the comer and said with the same flat tone. “Old people tend to overthink.”
“Overthink? You asked me to go.” Alex clicked his tongue and went to open his door. Before he went inside, he impatiently said, “Next time, think before you come to me. It’s annoying.”
What followed was the door slamming on her.
Candice held the takeaway in her hand. It was already cold.
She stood for a moment before she threw them into the trash can and headed home.
Joe was hospitalized for two days and the doctor discharged him on the third.
Candice went to pick him up.
As Joe grew older, staying in the hospital for just two days was more than enough to drive him mad.
He held Candice’s hand and shook his head repeatedly. “I said I was fine, but you insisted for me to stay here.”
Candice was helping him pack. She said, “I just need you to be safe.”
Joe chuckled. When he opened the door, he saw a girl pushing a wheelchair with a man in it, whose leg was in a cast. It looked a little too
strenuous for the girl
He furrowed his brows and went up to give her a push.
Sonia felt a sudden relief. She smiled obediently at Joe and nodded. “Thank you.”
Candice came out from the ward with Joe’s luggage and she saw him with Sonia. She instinctively frowned.
Joe saw her. He waved at her and said, “Candice, come give this girl a hand.”
Sonia was stunned when she saw Candice. “Candice? What are you doing here?”
Candice went up and helped Sonia change the direction of the wheelchair.
