Her words carried sincerity, yet Sonia's frail appearance only elicited sympathy.
Despite Sonia's heartfelt plea, Alex's expression remained neutral. His face remained aloof, keeping others at bay.
Given that Alex remained unaffected, Sonia bit her lip and showed him her phone.
"Look, I’m not lying to you. Candice arranged a meeting with Xavier. She despises Xavier, so why would she agree to meet him voluntarily? There must be some sort of conspiracy going on. Furthermore, after Xavier returned, I overheard him tell someone that Candice planned revenge against Aether Corporation."
Sonia held out her phone. Her eyes had become crimson as she glanced at Alex.
"I've made mistakes, but I used to work at Aether Corporation. I want what's best for the company."
Her portrayal was convincingly sincere, but Alex paid little attention. His attention was fully focused on Sonia's phone.
Candice and Xavier were shown in the photo sitting face-to-face. Something was placed between them, and they seemed to be conversing.
Even though their profile image was taken discreetly, Candice and Xavier were easily recognized.
Alex's eyes remained unaffected and revealed no emotion, leaving Sonia uncertain of his thoughts.
While waiting for Alex's response, Sonia felt a growing unease.
If she was being really honest, she was having an awful time at Horizon Holdings, particularly on the day she found out that Xavier had been flirting and texting multiple other women. He used the same phrases he had used with her before.
Sonia steeled herself, meeting Alex's gaze.
In the end, Xavier was no match for Alex. In terms of ability and appearance, Alex outperformed Xavier. Furthermore, her family was still unaware that she had broken up with
Alex, and they were pressing her to bring him home for dinner.
Sonia would never have dared to visit her former employer's office if she hadn't felt compelled to deceive her family about her situation with Alex.
Mentally bracing herself, she spoke softly, "Lex, I know I messed up…"
Before she could finish her sentence, Alex had already walked past her and left the room.
Sonia was taken aback but quickly followed him. She called out, "Lex?"
Alex didn't slow down, his voice cutting through the air with coldness. He questioned, "Does Xavier know that you clock in at Aether Corporation every day?"
Sonia was stunned, asking, "What do you mean?"
Alex's impatience was evident as he turned to face her.
"Don't you get it?" He snapped. "Do you not remember that you're still under the threat of leaking confidential information?"
"I haven't…" Sonia began, but Alex interrupted her once more.
"We have a month left on our deal. Whether you end up in trouble or not during this time is on you."
His words were unforgiving, leaving Sonia with a sinking feeling. She knew exactly what he meant.
In actuality, Alex had been brutal since he discovered she had released the documents to Xavier.
It wasn't until later, for some reason, that Sawyer ran into her and mentioned the possibility of making amends.
She first interpreted Alex's leniency and unwillingness to go with her as a gesture. After she was barred from the CEO's office and no longer able to visit Alex, she came to understand that he was serious.
Making her pay for her own faults was all he was doing, not being hesitant or giving her a chance.
Sonia suddenly felt unable to breathe. She squatted down, clutching her chest.
