Henry looked visibly annoyed.
Hailey insincerely suggested from the side, "Come on! Mr. Fisher is open-minded and generous. Adding each other on WhatsApp isn't that hard. Why are you making such a big fuss? You are giving the impression that Mr. Fisher is attempting to harm you."
Henry adjusted his spectacles. He frowned and explained, "Mr. Fisher and I are longtime friends. He's just looking out for you."
Candice simply replied, "Why should he look out for me? Do I have a close relationship with him? Besides—"
She spoke sarcastically, "You've ignored me for years, and now you're telling me your friend cares about me. Can you believe your own words?"
"Candice!" Henry bellowed quietly.
His face turned awfully pale as he became enraged.
Henry chastised, "How dare you treat your elders so rudely? Is it your grandfather or your mother? I should have fought for your custody back then. What have you become now?! Showing disrespect to elders without even understanding it was a mistake!"
Candice had kept her wrath under control, but when Henry brought up Joe and mocked him in a blaming tone, it fueled her rage.
Her expression turned cold, and she barked, "You have no right to mention Joe!"
Candice's grandparents had passed away a long time ago. Joe had always treated Henry as if he were his own son. Joe supported Henry even after Yvonne filed for divorce. Joe never spoke negatively about Henry to Candice even after uncovering his infidelity.
In light of this, how could Henry blame Joe?!
Henry lifted his hand abruptly. His eyes were filled with wrath as he yelled, "Don't you have any manners?! How dare you speak to me that way? It's my responsibility for failing to discipline you throughout the years!"
He slapped her after saying that.
Candice couldn't get away in time and turned to the side. She braced herself for the pain but was pulled back several steps and sank into a comforting hug.
The familiar aroma engulfed her as she looked up to see Alex's strong jawline. She was held closely in his arms, barely out of Henry's reach.
The room went silent.
Surprised, Henry gazed at his hand, which had missed the mark. His manner was domineering, but there was a tinge of shame on his face.
Regardless, when he saw Alex, all of his remorse was gone. His rage revived, and he exclaimed, "Candice! Am I not within my rights to lecture you?! Look at who you've become!"
Candice clenched her fist, unable to shake the fear of the moment. Henry's furious questions rang in her ears.
She closed her eyes briefly and then gently turned to face Henry. Her eyes were filled with intense chilliness.
Angela burst into the private room and excitedly asked, "Oh, am I late? Candy, does your father's offer to treat me still stand?"
Her remarks came to a sudden stop when she saw Alex.
"Mr. Elysian, you made it here so quickly?" She asked with a clear hint of astonishment.
Candice ignored Angela and focused her attention on Henry. She saw a fleeting guilt and uneasiness in his eyes, but no sign of remorse or regret.
This man seemed to believe it didn't matter if he slapped Candice or not.
