I sat on my bed and stared blankly at Patrick. I was scared and confused. Patrick's gaze was restless and angry. I bet that he regretted leading the legions in this werewolf war. He would rather join the rest of the Royal Army to fight degenerates and the one claiming to be the New King.
"Do you think that JD might be someone from my father's pack?" I asked after sucking a deep wave of air into my lungs.
"We can't ignore that possibility," he sighed heavily, knowing that doing so would only make me hate my heritage even more.
"But as far as I know, there is no one in the pack capable of doing such things." I knew little about the current situation inside the pack, but I knew my father, and he would never allow keeping someone this strong within the pack, someone who could be a threat to his reign.
"Have you considered that it might be your father?" Patrick asked, hesitantly.
"Don't be ridiculous." I waved that idea away quickly. "JD's notes sounded like there was something intimate between him and Elora. I think I'm about to throw up just trying to add my father to that picture…"
Patrick shot me an awkward smile. "Yeah, I guess you are right. But putting intimacy aside, you have to admit that he kind of fits…"
"Don't even go there, Patrick." I glared at him. "There is one more issue that doesn't fit: the degenerates. How could a werewolf create an army of degenerates for himself?"
Patrick must have known this much better than I did. This type of army couldn't have been created by a wolf.
"I know," he tossed, angrily. "There has to be a strong commoner biting people solely to create an army. Then those bitten ones are locked away and rarely given blood to keep their bloodlust on a high level until they are thrown to fight," he explained.
"That would make sense… But do you seriously think that the commoner, no matter how strong he is, could challenge Sariel, a noble, pure-blooded vampire?" I smiled wryly, doubting that it could ever happen.
Patrick exhaled, and shook his head. "No. There is no chance that JD is a commoner, but perhaps JD has a commoner beside him, creating an army for him?" he suggested.
It was hopeless. Neither of us had a clue who JD might have been, but we knew that he could be somewhere close.
"I got another note from him." I finally choked out and handed Patrick the piece of paper.
"Shit," he squeezed out, reading the note before he looked at me. "This guy sounds like he is obsessed with you."
"No kidding," I chuckled ironically, "he sent me a black rose as well. I don't know what his game is, but he freaks me out, big time."
Patrick stood up and placed his hand on my shoulder. "Don't worry, Lilith. The plan stays the same. I will have someone watch over you. If we are lucky, we'll catch the one putting the notes. If we are less lucky, we won't catch him, but we'll keep him away from you."
I nodded, forcing myself to smile and act as if his words helped me calm down, but that was just the mask I put on. On the inside, I was hardly restraining myself from falling apart. I took another deep breath, pretending that I was all right, and looked straight into his eyes.
"There is one more thing you need to know…" I swallowed. "JD obviously has a spy among the Moon Hill Pack, but I don't think it was the spy who put those notes on my pillow."
"What do you mean?" Patrick leaned over me, processing my words.
"For some time now, my senses have become sharper, and I can differentiate things like scents and auras," I explained nervously. "When I entered the room, I felt an almost overwhelming power. It was something I hadn't felt from Draven or even Sariel… It was terrifying, and I doubt that a mere spy could have an aura like that."
Patrick's gaze became darker. I knew that he realized that my situation was becoming more complicated and dangerous. Nonetheless, he did everything he could, trying not to make me worry even more.
"I will keep you safe, Lilith," he claimed, confidently.
"Seriously?" I snorted. "That sounds quite weird, considering we are leaving for war at dawn. Besides, I can take care of myself. Just have someone keep their eyes open just in case this fucker shows up right beside me."
