Chapter 235 Basil’s Favorite Food

When Emyr arrived, he caught Charmaine in the middle of watching him and Veronica from the window, her meal in front of her like she was casually observing a TV show.
Emyr sighed in frustration. “That bad?”
He clicked his tongue and said, “Roll down the window. The smell’s unbearable.”
Without hesitating, Charmaine hit the button to lower the window and muttered, “Isn’t this food more appetizing than Veronica’s perfume?”
Emyr’s gaze sharpened, his eyes fixed on her as if he were trying to understand what she was thinking. “Are you feeling jealous?”
Charmaine paused with a bite halfway to her mouth, then turned to face him. “Am I? I don’t think so.”
Emyr’s patience wore thin. “She helped me. I’m simply returning the favor. Don’t overanalyze it.”
Charmaine, still looking down, masked the flicker of annoyance in her eyes. She teased, “Mr. Emyr, with all your capabilities, you actually needed Veronica’s help? Or maybe you’re confusing her with someone else?”
Emyr’s voice grew firm. “I’m sure it was her. This is about something from the past.”
Charmaine’s eyes narrowed as she nodded, then continued eating without saying another word.
The next morning, Charmaine woke early, made breakfast for Emyr, then left the house.
She wandered toward a lively street near Beacon Hospital, where the morning breakfast rush had filled the air with the delicious smells of street food.
Charmaine picked up some muffins and nibbled on them as she lazily looked at the small shops surrounding her.
Then, without warning, she walked into a small restaurant. She sat down next to an elderly man in a wool hat, hunched in the corner.
The old man hadn’t touched his spaghetti–he’d only poked at a corner and then stopped. He was struggling with a brand–new flagship smartphone, one that had been in high demand for months.
He seemed to be having trouble using it. Squinting at the screen, he tapped and swiped in frustration. After a while, he tossed the phone down on the table in annoyance.
Charmaine glanced at the device, grateful that it was built to withstand tough conditions; otherwise, the old man’s temper might’ve destroyed it.
The man noticed her presence and glanced over briefly, his scowl softening for a moment before hardening again. He muttered a grunt and turned away.
Charmaine fought the urge to laugh out loud.
At that moment, the phone buzzed with a new message. The old man’s irritation deepened, and Charmaine, speaking in a tone like she was calming a child, offered, “Would you like me to set your phone to ‘Do No

Basil shot her a quick look, silent in his annoyance.
He’s definitely stubborn!

Charmaine smiled softly, took the phone from his hands, and easily unlocked it. She quickly adjusted the settings, even enlarged the font for him.
Basil couldn’t help but notice her thoughtful gestures, and his expression softened just a little.
When Charmaine looked back at him, he quickly masked his softened look, returning to his usual serious demeanor.
Knowing he wasn’t the easiest person to please, Charmaine stood up, paid for their meal at the counter, then washed her hands before heading to the kitchen.
A moment later, she returned with a hot plate of spaghetti and placed it before Basil.
She grinned. “I added extra mushrooms, just the way you like it. Care to try?”
