Charmaine shook her head. “Alright, hurry up and wash up. Why aren’t you asleep yet? It’s getting late.” 

At this, Emyr looked uncomfortable. “You go first.” 

Charmaine was confused. “Why should I go first? I already took a shower in the afternoon. I just need to brush my teeth. You still need a shower.” 

Emyr refused to explain, simply pushed her toward the bathroom with his usual commanding force. “You go on.” 

Charmaine was speechless.

She muttered as she walked toward the bathroom. 

As she cracked the heavy door open slightly, she heard a very clear sound, “Meow! Meow!”

Her heart nearly jumped out from her throat as she quickly opened the door all the way. To her, the scene in front of her seemed almost magical–there, in the bathroom, were two kittens. 

No, all of the cats, including the bigger ones, had been placed in the bathroom. 

At the sight of her, the kittens came over and rubbed against her legs, begging for milk. The big cats curled up with their tails around them, lying on the warm floor. They glanced at her lazily and then went back to sleep. 

Charmaine felt her heart swell with joy, her excitement so strong it felt like her hair would burst from her head. 

She scooped one of the kittens into her arms and rushed over to Emyr. Her smile couldn’t be hidden, and she was both flustered and overjoyed. 

“When did you bring them back?” 

Looking at the bright joy in her eyes, Emyr felt his lips curl into a slight smile as if he too was caught up in her happiness. 

“Alfred and Kane both said you like them, so I had Tad bring them all back.” 

After a pause, Emyr continued, “Tad took them to the vet for a check–up and deworming. The bigger ones are a bit overweight, other than that, they are healthy.”

Caught off guard by the sudden appearance of a kitten in his arms, Emyr immediately tensed, not daring to move, letting the kitten wriggle on him in all directions. He was stiff but refused to make a single move. 

Charmaine was surprised by his reaction. “Are you afraid of cats?” 

“No.” Emyr’s face darkened. “They’re so small, I dare not hold them.” 

There was a second part to his sentence that he didn’t say out loud. 

He was afraid that if he wasn’t careful, he might accidentally hurt the kittens. 

Seeing his flustered expression, Charmaine couldn’t help but laugh. 

So, Satan can get scared sometimes? 

Emyr coughed twice, trying to ignore the kitten wreaking havoc on his chest. He straightened his expression and continued, “The older cats are about two years old. They’ve been strays for a while, so they might not be used to being house pets. But the yard here is big, and tomorrow Alfred will put trackers on them so they can roam freely in Eastlake. We’ll feed them regularly and take care of their deworming. As for the two little ones 

” 

Emyr gave a complex look at the meowing kittens, almost helplessly accepting the situation. “If you want to keep them at home, then keep them.” 

Holding the kitten in her arms, Charmaine listened to Emyr’s words, a soft satisfaction blooming inside her.

The empty space that had once been neglected was now completely filled with this simple word.
