That sentence hit like a bombshell, and Noelle's mind buzzed as if an explosion had just gone off. Nothing about the sudden news made sense.
She glanced at Xenia, who did not even look like she wanted to argue. In her past life, Xenia had schemed her way into marrying Justin to become a wealthy socialite. So, why was everything different now?
Donovan looked irritated. "Wyatt, what the hell are you doing? Everyone knows Xenia was adopted into our family—if you get involved with her, people will start talking."
He had always known Wyatt had feelings for Xenia. However, after all these years apart, he assumed Wyatt had moved on.
Meanwhile, Xenia kept her head down, staying silent. Right now, Wyatt was the only person she could rely on. She had not heard anything from Sean, and she could not afford to pin all her hopes on him.
She needed a backup plan, and luckily, Wyatt still had feelings for her.
Wyatt answered in a heartbeat, "Xenia was only adopted—she's not actually related to the Liddells. I've liked her for years, and if it weren't for my injury, I wouldn't have waited until now to say it."
Noelle found it odd. Based on what she knew about Xenia, that bitch never cared for the Liddells—her goal had always been to marry rich and climb the social ladder.
So, why would she settle for Wyatt now? Eventually, Noelle figured she might be doing this to cover up the bribery scandal. It seemed that Xenia really would do anything to save herself.
Donovan hesitated, looking conflicted. "This isn't appropriate."
Wyatt replied, "There's nothing inappropriate about it. Xenia and I love each other."
Donovan cast a skeptical glance at Xenia. "But wasn't she dating that Parham boy?"
Xenia quickly cut in. "Justin and I broke up. Everything he said before was just a lie to fool me."
Of course, she was not about to admit that she and Justin were still secretly seeing each other. However, Donovan still did not believe a word that came out of her mouth. Even Noelle found her excuse flimsy at best.
Yet, Wyatt turned to Noelle and said, "Noelle, Xenia is going to be your sister-in-law. She's part of the Liddells now—you wouldn't go after your own family so ruthlessly, would you?"
Noelle clapped her hands slowly, her tone mocking. "Wow. That was quite the performance."
